National University of Water Management and Nature Resources Use came into existence in 1915 in Kyiv as a Hydromeliorative technical school. Five years later it became a school of higher learning known as Kyiv Hydromeliorative Institute. In 1959 it was moved to the city of Rivne and granted the status of All-Republican Institute. In December 1995 the Institute was reorganized into the State Academy. In 1998 the Academy was accredited by the multi-disciplinary accreditation commission of Ukrainian Ministry of Education and acquired the status of a University. In 2004 it became National University of Water Management and Nature Resources Use.

NUWMNRU is one of the leading scientific, educational and technological centers of Ukraine. The mission of the university is to educate students to be independent learners in the international community of changing values and skilled specialists in our complex world. It is considered to be Alma-Mater for about 60,000 specialists who work in Ukraine and abroad. The university enjoys national and international reputation for the contribution in scientific research and training of skilled specialists.

NUWMNRU currently enrolls more than 13,000 day-time and correspondence students. They study at nine faculties: Faculty of Water Management, Faculty of Hydrotechnical Engineering and Hydroenergetics, Faculty of Economy and Business, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Integrated Systems, Faculty of Ecology and Nature Resources Use, Faculty of Land Management and Geoinformatic Systems, Faculty of Building and Architecture, Mechanical and Power Engineering Faculty. The training of specialists is done in 15 directions and 32 specialities of III and IV accreditation levels (Bachelor, Specialist, Master).There are graduates who want to get one more higher education or they have decided to change their received speciality, so they can be students of Institute of Pre-University Training and get an after-diploma education. It carries out retraining and upgrading of specialist’s skill in all university specialities with awarding state diploma. Training is done by day-time, extra-mural and externate forms.

Most of the faculties have day-time and correspondence departments. The term of study for day-time students lasts 4 or 5 years. It takes four years to complete a course leading to the degree of Bachelor, five years to gain the degree of Specialist or Master. The University provides a wide range of Post-graduate degrees.

The academic year runs from September till June. It is divided into two terms: autumn and spring and it has two vacations. During the terms students have to attend lectures, classes and seminars. The study of theory is usually accompanied by practical training. At the end of each term students take exams, tests, yearly projects. At the end of training they defend their diploma projects. Advanced students may defend them in a foreign language. Today National University has a teaching and research staff of over 700 professors, associate-professors, senior lecturers, who offer many-sided and profound knowledge to their students. They are also engaged in research work. The University Campus is situated not far from the centre of Rivne. The Campus includes 7 study buildings, which contain lecture rooms, seminar rooms, laboratories with up-to-date equipment, computer centers and libraries. There are 8 hostels with good living conditions and a sport building where students can enjoy the regular sport exercises. Full medical service is offered in the health centre. Those students, who enjoy singing or dancing, can join University’s sing or dance groups. Our University is one of the prestige higher educational institutions in Ukraine and it is highly rated by young people.

Rivne

Rivne is a regional centre of Ukraine. It is located in wood-steppe zone of Ukraine on Volyn platform on the banks of the Ustya river, a tributary to the Goryn river. It is one of the biggest cities of Ukrainian Polissya. Its population is 247 thousand people. The area of the city is 58.24 km2. The main part of population are the Ukrainians- over 80%, the rest is presented by Russians, Byelorussians, Polish, Hungarians, Jews, Moldavians. The state language is Ukrainian.

The first official mentioning about future city - regional centre is considered to be in 1283, when not far away from it in frantic bloody battle Polish king Leshko Chorny has wipped the Lithuanian army. Regularly Rivne as the settlement began to be mentioned in the sources of the 15-th century. On December 22, 1461 Ivashko Dychko sold his property - a countryard and a village in Lutsk povit named Rivne to prince Semen Vasilyovych Nesvitsky with his goodwill for 300 golden coins of Czech money. Semen Nesvitsky was the owner of Rivne for 20 years till his death in 1481. His wife Maria Nesvitska after her husband’s death has funded in Rivne the first wooden palace surrounded by the defensive trenches. Craftsmen and other workers who made the first settlement began to arrive to the palace and its suburbs.

Today Rivne is administrative, economic, educational and cultural centre. Rivne region is remarkable for the good geographical location on the crossing of international transport highways (Berlin - Kyiv), closeness to the European Union border (140 km) and the capital of Ukraine Kyiv(250 km). The town has developed railway and motor-car systems. A mobile communication network covers almost the whole territory of the Region.

Rivne region has a considerable production potential and a developed technical base. 265 enterprises of different forms of ownership operate in the industrial complex of the Region: Rivne Nuclear Power Plant, Open Join Stock Company “Rivneazot”, Rivne High-voltage Equipment Plant, the Glass container plant “Consumers-Sklo-Zoria”, Rivne Match Factory, Woodworking Plant (Swisspan Ltd), Rivne factory of non-fabric materials, Rivneenergo, Amber plant. Activity of these enterprises influences a situation in separate sectors of industry and power engineering of Ukraine.

Rivne region is the European monopolist of the basaltic deposits. Large deposits of amber are of great importance too. There have been discovered deposits of phosphorites, sources of mineral water and mud.

Growing of corn cultures, sugar beet, potato and vegetables, production of meat and milk goods are priority directions of agrarian sector development in the region. Considerable efforts are directed on the renewal of flax cultivation and hop growing, development of the meat cattle breeding.

The city has 7 high educational institutions of the 3-rd - 4-th accreditation levels. Today National University of Water Management and Nature Resources Use and Rivne Sate Humanitarian University train skilled specialists for national economy, education and culture. The system of technical schools is quite developed. Institutions of new type: lyceums, high schools, colleges - have been introduced.

Rich and varied is the cultural life of our city. Residents of Rivne have 2 theatres: the Regional Music and Drama Theatre and the Puppet-Show theatre, 2 movie-theatres, 598 library establishments, 10 state museums and preserves, historic-cultural preserves of Dubno and Ostroh, state historic-memorial preserve the “Field of the Berestetchko battle”.

Thousands of local residents go in for physical culture and sports. There is the Avangard stadium, the motor-cycle track, sport-grounds and swimming pools. The city is expanding its borders. New districts have grown up. Rivne is called a city of spring and flowers.

UKRAINE

Ukraine is an independent democratic state. The Republic has its own Constitution, Government, Supreme Council, President and Court. It got independence in 1991. The national flag is yellow-blue. The national emblem is “Trident”. The state language is Ukrainian. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv. It is situated on the longest river of Ukraine - the Dnieper.

Ukraine is situated in the south-east of Europe. It borders on Russia, Byelorussia, Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

The territory of Ukraine is 604,000 square kilometers. The population of Ukraine is about 52 million.

In the south Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. The major part of Ukraine is flat and only 5% of its territory is mountainous. There are the Carpathian mountains in the west and the Crimean Mountains in the south but they are not high. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favourable because the country lies on the crossroads of the ways from Asia to Europe. The main rivers are the Dnieper, the Dniester, the Bug, the Donets, the Danube. There are many sea ports in Ukraine, for example: Odesa, Kherson, Mykolayiv, Izmail, Illichivsk. Due to favourable climatic conditions Ukraine is traditionally an agricultural country. Wheat, maize, vegetables, all kinds of fruit are grown here.

Ukraine is rich in natural resources, such as iron ore, coal, nonferrous metals, oil, gas. The main branches of industry are: coal and ore mining, iron and steel engineering, machine and shipbuilding. Ukraine produces planes, ocean-liners, lorries, cars, tractors, combines, excavators, buses, electronic equipment, agricultural machines, TV and radio sets, synthetic diamonds and other goods.

A lot of Ukrainian scientists do important research work in biology, medicine, nuclear physics. They are members of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Ukraine has an ancient history. It has its own original culture and arts. Ukraine has many professional theatres, sing and dance companies, world known singers and composers.

Ukraine has diplomatic relations with many countries of the world. These relations are built on the basis of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in other country’s international affairs.
