Novosibirsk was founded late in the 19th century during the construction of the Great Siberian Railway (Trans-Siberian Railway). The talented Russian writer N.Garin-Michailovsky played an important role in the foundation of the city. The construction of the bridge began in 1893 and the foundation or Novosibirsk is considered to date back to this year.

Novosibirsk is a transport, trade, financial and administrative centre of the Novosibirsk Region. The region’s scientific potential is represented by 43 institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The heart of Novosibirsk is Lenin Square. The most prominent building in Lenin Square is the Novosibirsk Theatre of Opera and Ballet. The theatre frequently goes on tour and is well known both in Russia and abroad. Lenin Square is crossed by the cities main street – Krasny Prospect. This is a main road, ten kilometers long and straight as an arrow. It begins at the Ob embankment and runs north to the Central Airport of Novosibirsk.

The Gallery’s collection is now rich and varied, including works of art from 16th – century icons to contemporary paintings. The city has several theatres, a conservatoire, a circus, a zoo, many palaces of culture, libraries, recreation parks, stadiums and swimming pools.

The State Public Scientific and Technical Library in Novosibirsk is one of the world’s biggest book repositories.

The Metro is being built in the city now. There are 11 stations. The stations are built in a modern style and are today the places of interest in Novosibirsk. DIALOGUES. STRANGERS IN SIBERIA. IMPRESSIONS FROM THE STREETS

DIALOGUE 1

K = KATA GYONGY, HUNGARY

R = reporter

R: Is anything you couldn’t get used to in Novosibirsk?

K: Everything is different for me here: food, work, metro, language, so I simply had to get used to all of it.

R: Which Novosibirsk habits would you like to keep when you return to Hungary?

K: Oh, I enjoy the tradition of getting a taxi in the street which is not a real taxi! You can just raise your arm and go, and it’s safe and common!

R: Is there something you couldn’t get used to in Novosibirsk?

K: I could never grasp why people start getting into the metro and buses before the ones getting off would have exited. It’s like sumo wrestling with many participants.

DIALOGUE 2

E = ELENA KRANJC, SLOVENIA

R = reporter

R: What was the biggest shock for you in Novosibirsk?

E: To see changes in the architecture. Half pleasant, half negative shock. Red-bricked houses of mixed architectural styles look awful.

R: What is the coolest place in Novosibirsk?

E: I guess it is the kitchen. Whatever you go – it doesn’t matter if the apartment is big or small – people end up drinking and talking in the kitchen. My Novosibirsk friends say it’s a habit from the past.

R: Did you have to quit any of your habits or hobbies since you came here?

E: Well, I have to learn not to be punctual however funny it may sound. Otherwise I waste my time waiting for people.

DIALOGUE 3

B = BILL SCHMIDT, AMERICA

R = reporter

R: What was your first impression of Novosibirsk?

B: Just great! It’s full of different characters. The rhythm of its life bears resemblance to a heart of a living thing. It never rests.

R: Which Novosibirsk habits would you like to keep when you come back to where you live?

B: To stay with your friends until five in the morning, and then sleep for five hours, wake up and feel refreshed. I can’t explain why but in Novosibirsk five hours sleep is enough for me.

DIALOGUE 4

D = DANIEL MULLER, AUSTRIA

R = reporter

R: Was there something that has really surprised or shocked you here?

D: Well… Actually nothing. There were no extreme differences for me, comparing it with my country. Mmm… may be heat. It’s too hot here in summer. It was a surprise for me. I supposed Siberia to be a very cold place.

R: Did you try Russian cuisine?

D: Yes. It’s more or less normal food. And I like that you eat a lot of meat. By the way, my favorite Russian dish is pelmeni.

R: What traits of Novosibirsk life would you prefer never to see again?

D: The queues, rubbish in the streets and homeless people all around.

DIALOGUE 5

P = Phillipe APOSTOLIDES; FRANCE

R = reporter

R: What was your first impression of Novosibirsk?

P: Good one. I come from Paris and I like big cities.

R: Is there anything you can’t get used to in Novosibirsk?

P: I still can’t understand why people are so rough sometimes.

R: What do you think about Novosibirsk underground?

P: Marvelous! Beautiful stations, pure joys of art.

DIALOGUE6

K = KIM BALASHAK, AMERICA

R = reporter

R: What was your first impression of Novosibirsk?

K: Very dirty, to tell the truth.

R: Is there anything you can’t get used to in Novosibirsk?

K: People throwing the trash on the streets.

R: What would you say is the coolest place in Novosibirsk?

K: I like the metro. There I can keep my fingers on the pulse of what people are doing.

R: What is the difference between Novosibirsk and the place you come from?

K: When people are on the escalator in the metro, for instance, they talk if they were the only two people in the entire world and nobody else matter. And in the States people are much more aware of who is around them.

DIALOGUE 7

J = JOSE LUGHNASA, SPAIN

R = reporter

R: How would you describe Novosibirsk in a single word?

J: Chaotic.

R: Is there anything about Russia that your compatriots would not believe if you told them?

J: People walk in the streets in winter even if it’s minus 30 degrees… and also take beer in the squares… very nice custom.

R: What does Novosibirsk lack?

K: Novosibirsk lacks sea… I live near the sea so you can imagine how hard it is.

DIALOGUE 8

H = HERMAN VAN DER BERG, DUTCH

R = reporter

R: What is the difference between Novosibirsk and the place you come from?

H: People are always in a hurry. They can be in a hurry even when they seem to be enjoying their dinner.

R: What images of Russia did you have in mind before you came here? Which of them turned out to be true?

R: Cold, snow, red colour, vodka, KGB. And I was amazed to discover that Novosibirsk looks just like many European cities.
