The step evolution in information technology proceeds from the coincidence of the biggest changes in the context of business that are convergence, deregulation and networks. The telephone, the television and the computer are the devices of the modern knowledge revolution. Recent developments are gradually eroding the boundaries between these three separate devices and the distinction among them will disappear very soon. One of the developments facilitates transmitting and processing information in a digital format that is common among them. This hugely simplifies the exchange of functions and information between these devices. For instance, suppliers have presented PCs that can download TV broadcasts directly from the internet and telephones that show information and handle e-mail. Also, they introduce televisions that let users to interact with the particular system and use them in order to link to other available services. The fully integrated devices create Networked Multimedia, which is an interconnected set of communication services and information in data, audio and video format.

The global main business and financial centers are linked by so-called optical fibers. This kind of network is capable of managing numerous times the world’s today’s telecommunications traffic. In 1998, BT made an announcement that they were looking to invest about £1bn per year for the time period of five years on the European fiber network. This flow of infrastructure investment encouraged suppliers to lower component prices. Raised capacity lowered charges by fifty percent a year. The story is identical in entire developed markets. A number of advances in the networking technology are taking place that complement a large-scale network provision investment. The available capacity is further multiplied by technology which uses colors of light in order to carry transmissions. The exploiting of IP Internet protocol technology for data and voice transmissions is largely popular. This highly common infrastructure decreases the cost of operating a network, thus suppliers may focus on maintenance and delivery.

The roots of new changes in the industry of telecommunications lie in the policy norms of Western governmental administration to deregulate their telecoms markets. Many of them have privatized previously state-owned suppliers and exposed these telecom suppliers to international and domestic competition.

Successful and competent management of information systems and technologies is a major challenge for business professionals and managers. The function of the information systems represents a key constituent of the capabilities, resources, and infrastructure of modern networked business companies. It is a dynamic, challenging, and rewarding career opportunity for a large number of men and women. The information systems is a vital functional sphere of business equally as significant to business prosperity as the functions of human resources management, finance, accounting, marketing, and operations management. Additionally, it is a major contributor to labor productivity and morale, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction and service. Finally, the information systems is an essential ingredient in promoting competitive services and products that give a firm a strategic superiority in the global marketplace.
