The Importance of Learning English

English is the language of international communication in many areas of life: trade, diplomacy, science, tourism, sport and entertainment. At present English is the most important of the world’s languages. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue in such countries as: Great Britain, the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A lot of people speak English in China, Japan, India and in the African and many other countries. As in number of speakers it ranks second, people in our country study it as a second language.

Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process, that takes a lot of time and efforts. Nowadays it is especially important to know foreign languages, because some people need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby.

Speaking is considered by many as the main objective of language learning. The knowledge of spoken language will help you: to say what you want to say, to give and receive information, to speak to people from other countries, to listen to and understand foreign music, to read foreign writers in the original, which makes your outlook wider.

Studying of foreign languages enriches the native language, makes it clearer, more flexible and expressive. It gives you a great opportunity to compare two languages, to understand the mentality of another nation.

To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. People, who know foreign languages, are necessary for the development of the techniques, economy and arts in the modern society. For example, a good engineer or a qualified worker should be able to read some technical papers for the imported equipment.

During the classes of foreign languages one can train his memory and thinking. At our classes of English, which we had once or twice a week, we read and translated a lot, learnt new words and made up dialogues, spoke English. I pay much attention to English and I’m going to improve it in the course of time, because it’s impossible to be a good specialist without knowing this language.

The total number of languages in the world is from 2500 to 5000. English is spoken all over the world, it is widely used nowadays. There are more than 750 million speakers of English in the world and barely half of those speak it as a mother tongue. At present English is the most important of the world’s languages.

Three-quarters of the world’s mail and its telexes and cables are in English. So are more than half the world’s technical and scientific periodicals: it is the language of technology from Silicon Valley to Shanghai. English is the medium for 80 per cent of the information stored in the world’s computers.

It is the language of sports and glamour: the official language of the Olympics and the Miss Universe Competition. English is the official voice of the air and the sea and the Christianity: it is the ecumenical language of the World Council of Churches. The largest broadcasting companies in the world (CBS, NBS, ABC, BBC) transmit in English to audiences that regularly exceed 100 million.

As in number of speakers it ranks second, people in our country study it as a second language. Nowadays it is especially important to know foreign languages, because there are many reasons to study them. Some people need them for their work or future career, others travel abroad…

Businesses worldwide use English as the universal language and medium of communication. Nearly half of all business deals in Europe are conducted in English. So, making business nowadays also means the ability of speaking foreign languages. This is also true, if you want to enter a foreign school or university. If we are working in any branch of science, we naturally wish to read scientific books and magazines in other language to raise our professional level.

Knowing a foreign language, one can not only read the papers, magazines, but as well watch satellite TV programs, travel easily to the different parts of the world so tourism is another area, where English has been embraced: many English speaking people like to visit different countries on vacation.

Besides, understanding and speaking a foreign language or two became necessary while applying for a good and well-paid job. To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. People, who know foreign languages, are necessary for the development of the techniques, economy and arts in the modern society. There is a saying: the more languages you speak, the more times you are a human being.

English has become the language of the planet, truly global language. It has no equals! Dispute it if you can!
