Eco-tourism has been around for years, since the 1980s to be exact. It has only been the last few years that it has really caught the attention of travellers everywhere though.

Ecotourism is a form of tourism that involves visiting natural areas -- in the remote wilderness or urban environments. According to the definition and principles of ecotourism established by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) in 1990, ecotourism is "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." Martha Honey, expands on the TIES definition by describing the seven characteristics of ecotourism, which are:

Ecotourism is a new trend in the tourism industry that focuses on questions of sustainability for the area being traveled to. The concept of ecotourism appeared in the 1950s, first being introduced in Africa with the legalization of hunting. However, it was not until the 1980s that ecotourism became widely accepted as travelers and host communities have become more educated and sensitive to the need to preserve the environment. In 2010, ecotourism represents the fastest growing subsector of the tourism industry.

Eco-tourism is perfect for individuals that are interested in the natural world. It is all about getting back to nature and valuing everything around us. As a result, eco-tourism is incredible and can really make you feel like you are alive. The one thing that puts most individuals off is that it sounds expensive, but if you know where to look and take the hints and tips given to you, then it need not be expensive at all.

There are many countries all over the world that have very active eco-tourism resorts, and the majority of them have received rave reviews from individuals that have already experienced them. Costa Rica, India, Ecuador and Kenya are the most popular destinations that support eco-tourism at the moment, but there are others that seem to fly under the radar and these may be the best picks for individuals or couples wanting to experience it firsthand in a remote location.

Africa is special. Its wild lands and waters are home to incredible numbers and diversity of species living close to people. For most rural Africans, connection to place takes on unique meaning, more so than anywhere else on Earth because their daily existence depends on the productivity of their natural resources. From the heights of Mount Kilimanjaro to a plentiful coastline, Africa supports some of the most stunning places and wildlife left on Earth. Much remains as it was millennia ago, a fact to be rejoiced. But population growth and changes in climate have altered Africa’s landscapes over the past 50 years. With increasingly complex challenges comes the need for evolved conservation strategies.
