Step 1

ANALYZE YOUR AUDIENCE

Proper audience analysis will assure that you give the right speech to the right audience.

As a speaker you should analyze your listeners and then decide how to present your ideas. A key to successful presentation is to make the audience feel that the presentation was designed specially for them. To be able to do so, there are certain things you need to know:

ü Age

ü Sex

ü Where do they come from?

ü Is their background technical or general?

ü Are they students, administrators, executives, engineers or sales people?

ü How much do they already know about the subject of your presentation?

Step 2

DEFINE OBJECTIVES

The general purpose of speaking to a group might be to inform, persuade, instruct or entertain the audience. Your motivation is to get satisfaction from expressing your ideas and getting recognition or applause from the audience.

Your objectives must answer the following questions:

Ø What is the purpose of the presentation?

· To persuade?

· To inform?

· To instruct?

· To entertain?

Ø Why is it important?

Ø What do you want your audience to remember?

Ø What is the core message?

When the presentation is over, what do you want the audience

· To do?

· To say?

· To believe?

· To remember?

Step 3

CREATE A STRONG INTRODUCTION

Tips for Preparing the Introduction

Ø It might take you as long to prepare a good introduction as the main part of your presentation.

Ø Keep the introduction relatively brief. Under normal circumstances it should not constitute more than about 10 to 20 percent of your speech. You want to make an impression, and get to the main points as soon as possible.

Ø Don't worry about the exact wording of your introduction until you have finished preparing the body of the speech. After you have determined your main points, it will be much easier to make final decisions about how to begin the speech.

Ø Work out your introduction in detail. Practice the introduction over and over until you can deliver it smoothly from a minimum of notes and with strong eye contact. Don’t forget to use it as a "set-up" for the conclusion.

Step 4

OUTLINE BODY

Most speeches should contain no more than two to five main points because listeners cannot keep track of a multitude of main points. Each main point should focus on a single idea, should be worded clearly, and should receive enough emphasis to be clear and convincing.

The body should include:

- your main points or ideas
- points which support your main message

Connectives.
