It was like the roll of thunder in the distant mountains. Beatrice looked at her coolly.

Lena smiled bravely. | Arrow and Beatrice gave her a quick look. Everyone knows how fattening cocktails are. | In each napkin were two little antifat rusks. Lena gave a bright smile as she put them by the side of her plate. | Beatrice stifled a sigh, and reached for the saccharine. | The stony silence that followed this speech was only broken by the entrance of the butler. | She threw herself on her knees and enveloped what she could of Frank in her own plump arms. She wept and the mascara ran down her cheeks. | The potatoes were brought. Not all the perfumes of Arabia smelt so sweet. They ate them with their fingers. | But Beatrice suddenly thought she would like a meringue. | Lena smiled bravely. | The stony silence that followed this speech was only broken by the entrance of the butler. |

"Eating," she answered.

"Damn it, I can see you're eating."

In front of Beatrice was a plate of croissants and a plate of butter, a pot of strawberry jam, coffee and a jug of cream. Beatrice was spreading butter thick on the delicious hot bread, covering this with jam, and then pouring the thick cream over all.

"You'll kill yourself," said Frank.

"I don't care," mumbled Beatrice with her mouth full.

"You'll put on pounds and pounds."

"Go to hell!"

She actually laughed in Frank's face. My God, how good those croissants smelt!

"I'm disappointed in you, Beatrice (ты разочаровываешь меня, Беатрис: «я разочарована в тебе»). I thought you had more character (я думала, ты имела = в тебе больше характера)."

"It's your fault (это твоя вина). That blasted woman (та чертова женщина; blasted— разрушенный; проклятый; чертовский). You would have her down (ты очень хотела, чтобы она погостила у нас; would— вспомогат. гл. для образ. будущего в прошедшем и условного наклонения; модальный гл., выражающий настойчивость, желание;tohavedown— принимать в качестве гостя). For a fortnight I've watched her gorge like a hog (в течение двух недель я наблюдала, /как/ она обжирается как свинья; hog— боров, свинья /особенно откормленная на убой/). It's more than flesh and blood can stand (это выше сил человеческих: «это больше, чем плоть и кровь могут вынести»). I'm going to have one square meal if I bust (я собираюсь хоть раз наестся до отвала: «иметь одну обильную еду», даже если лопну; if I bust = even if I burst)."

The tears welled up to Frank's eyes (слезы навернулись на глаза Фрэнк; towell— бить ключом; хлынуть; набегать на глаза /о слезах/;up— вверх; из глубины на поверхность). Suddenly she felt very weak and womanly She would have liked a strong man to take her on his knee and pet her (ей хотелось бы, /чтобы/ какой-нибудь сильный мужчина взял = посадил ее на свои колени и приласкал) and cuddle her and call her little baby names (и обнял ее, и назвал ее самыми ласковыми именами; little— маленький;baby— ребенок, младенец). Speechless she sank down on a chair by Beatrice's side A waiter came up (подошел официант). With a pathetic gesture she waved towards the coffee and croissants

"I'll have the same," she sighed

She listlessly reached out her hand to take a roll (она машинально: «вяло/безразлично» протянула руку, чтобы взять одну булочку), but Beatrice snatched away the plate (но Беатрис отдернула тарелку; tosnatchaway— отдергивать, резко убирать).

"No, you don't," she said "You wait till you get your own (ты жди, пока тебе принесут: «пока ты получишь» твои собственные)."

Frank called her a name (Фрэнк назвала ее /таким/ словом; name— имя; название) which ladies seldom apply to one another in affection (которое леди редко употребляют по отношению друг /к/ другу, будучи близкими подругами; in— в;affection— привязанность, любовь, симпатия, нежность к кому-либо). In a moment the waiter brought her croissants, butter, jam and coffee

"Where's the cream, you fool (где сливки, болван; you— ты, вы; употребляется также для усиления восклицания)?" she roared like a lioness at bay (прорычала она как львица, загнанная в угол; atbay— в безвыходном положении).
