Task 5. Read carefully the following short conversations silently. Mark the intonation of the responses using Intonation Contour 5. Then read the dialogues aloud observing the intonation pattern and expressing the appropriate attitude of the responses.

1. You must be able to see through it. It’s glass. All glass isn’t transparent.

2. I tell you it was January. That’s wrong.

3. I suppose we must phone him. We’d better go and see him.

4. We weren’t invited. Weren’t we?

5. You weren’t supposed to stay at home. Does it matter?

6. Whose turn is it? Isn’t it mine?

7. I’d like a new fur coat? Who’s going to pay for it?

8. When are you free? When am I free?

9. Shut the window, for heaven’s sake. Who do you think you’re

talking to?

10. I don’t think I can eat it. Taste it.

11. That vase is valuable. Careful with it.

12. All right. I’m just going. Move yourself.

13. Alex says you’re a bore. Confound his impudence!

14. He wants you to give him a reference. Whatever next!

15. He made the same mistake again. Isn’t he a fool!

Task 6. Read silently the conversations below. Translate and write down the responses. Mark the intonation of the responses using Intonation Contour 5. Think of the attitudes the responses should convey. Read the conversations aloud.

1. A: Everyone’s gone home. B: Не всі.

2. A: Anna won’t be here tomorrow. B: Вона обов’язково прийде.

3. A: Can I take this one? B: Будь ласка, якщо Ви

наполягаєте.

4. A: I said I’d call for her. B: Справді?

5. A: It’s very important. B: Це дійсно так важливо?

Task 7. Read the beginning utterances of a few short dialogues. Think about the possible responses (statements, questions, commands, requests, exclamations) and write them down. Using Intonation Contour 5, mark the stresses and tunes in the responses. Then read the dialogues aloud observing the intonation pattern and the attitude conveyed by it.

1. A: But I wasn’t at home. B:

2. A: I’ve finished my course-paper today. B:

3. A: What a horrid little flat! B:

4. A: You must never try this trick again. B:

5. A: Julie didn’t pass her driving test. B:

6. A: Can I use your headset? B:

7. A: It’s your turn to polish the floor. B:

8. A: You promised to help me with this task. B:

9. A: Come around at five. B:

10. A: I’ve brought a rare book. B:

11. A: Shall we cross the road here? B:

12. A: I’ll miss the bus. B:

13. A: She said you’d cheated her. B:

14. A: I was punished again. B:

15. A: So you think I’m a nuisance. B:

Task 8. Listen to the following conversational situations. Notice the intonation contour of the responses and attitudinal meaning associated with it in different communicative types of sentences. Then practise the conversations aloud.
