The Title

Judging by the title we can guess that the story will be about...

 

The Time

Now when I have read the story I can say that the events described in the text take place in

a) ancient times

b) Middle Ages

c) IX century

d) our time [Find the extract in the text to prove your opinion]

 

The Place

To my mind / It is mentioned in the book that the events described in the text take place in... (London, some small town, a big modern city, etc.) Find the example in the text.

 

The Main Characters

The main characters of the text are... / the main character is..

Describe the main character according to the following outline:

a) appearance

b) manners and habits

c) the way of communication with others

d) friends

Try to imagine and draw the main character(s) on a piece of paper.

 

The Events

The story logically falls in... (three, four, etc.) parts:

• The beginning

• The story itself

• The conclusion

In the beginning we learn the main characters and some facts of their way of life...

In the second part we see that...

In the conclusion we understand that...

 

The End of the Story

The end of the story is happy / unhappy, sad, optimistic, unexpected, banal, etc.

 

Your Attitude to the Story

I like / I didn’t like the story because it is interesting and exciting, humorous, easy to read / boring, banal, difficult to read, sad and oppressive, difficult to understand.

 

Speak about the kind of books you usually read and explain why you find them enjoyable and useful.

1. Explain the title. In what way is it suitable to the story?

2. Who tells the story? What point of view is used?

  o first person?
  o omniscient?

3. Are the events or incidents of the plot presented in flashback or in chronological order?

4. What is the general theme of the story? What is the underlying theme? Can you name any other stories / movies with a similar theme?

5. Does this story contain any of the following elements?

  o symbolism?
  o suspense?
  o surprise / open ending?
  o irony?

6. Can you find any examples of figurative language?

  o simile? o metaphor? o personification?

7. Does the story have a moral? If not, what do you think the purpose of the author was?

8. Where is the climax or turning point(s) in the story? (Identify page and paragraph.) Look for a change in fortune, or a reversal

9. How does the setting (environment as well as objects) support the theme?

10. Choose any one sentence from the story that seems to you particularly significant -for any reason and copy it, identifying the paragraph. Then explain the reason for your choice

11. How does the author handle characterization?

  o by description? o conversation of the characters? o actions of the characters? o combination of these methods?

12. Where does the primary action take place?

13. What is the time setting for the action? Period of history? Season? Time of day?

14. How much time does the story cover?

  o a few minutes? o a lifetime? o how long?
