PROTOCOL

Behind The Door- Family Stories Magazine

We want to know your stories of strengths, struggles and pains- the experiences not shared with the rest of the world, events occur that most people do not feel comfortable talking openly. Individuals and families are most likely to keep the accounts (stories) of what actually happened or happening within themselves and within the family and may not want to talk about it outside the family relationships. Even if the event happened on the street, in the workplace or in friendships, people are most likely to return home with the story either locked up within themselves or they will share it with few family members once they enter the home through the family door. We see people smartly dressed and may smile on the streets or at workplaces, yet once they arrive to the door of their homes and enter, they become different people sometimes carrying great happiness or heavy burden of life worries or pains.

 

We are creating a magazine of a universal family voice with three target audience (adults, adolescents and children) to encourage individual family members to tell their stories of pain or joy. The magazine’s goal is to improve family wellbeing for the present and for the future generations. They can anonymously tell their stories of pains, worries, struggles and frustrations and their own lessons and suggestions for other people with similar stories. These stories must be told in a raw content. For the issues raised in each or a group of stories (articles), a professional will suggest some solutions that may be of help to the story teller and the world (especially other families with a similar story).

 

A part of the magazine is to tell happy stories (these story tellers are free to remain anonymous or not) that often happen behind the closed family doors. We expect these happy stories to offer lessons and hope to other families and the world.

 

The Themes of The Stories:

 

Emotional Issues

· Difficult or great: parents, children, family members, in-laws, co-workers, employees, managers, etc.

· Betrayal of or celebration of love and trust

· Married couple’s sexual relationship

· Family daily or seasonal activities

· Family talents, innovations, creativity

· Humour

· Sibling issues

· Great/unique or bad family traditions,

· Could this be a miracle or supernatural/beyond science? If writing on this theme, you will be expected to back up your story with credible evidence.

Financial Issues

· Financial victories or problems in family

· Being a breadwinner

Physical Health Issues

· Being a carer

· Being sick or overcoming illness

Legal Issues

· Legal family concerns or legal victories

 

Things to Include in The Story:

· What happened before the story? Briefly narrate how life was with you in general before the experience being written about. What events took place before or what events led to the experience you are writing about?

· What is the story? What was the experience itself?

· What thoughts about yourself, other people and the world were going through your mind when the incident/event/story occurred? (back in time)

· What emotions/feelings were you experiencing when the incident/event/story occurred? (back in time)

· How did you behave when you had those thoughts and emotions/feelings? (back in time)

· What was the worst outcome (if any) from the experience?

· What was the best outcome (if any) from the experience?

· What lesson did you learn from your story/experience? What would you have done differently if you were to be given the chance to travel back in time?

· What was it that you needed to change for your future? That is if anything has already changed since after you experienced the story/event you have written about. Or what is it that you still need to change for your future? That is if nothing has changed since after you experienced the story/event you have written about.

· What advice could you give to families and to future generations so that they do not have to go through the same experience?

· What thoughts about yourself, other people and the world are going through your mind right now after sharing your story?

· What emotions/feelings are you experiencing right now after sharing your story?

 

Support

 

We will give you one free print copy or free access to one electronic copy of the magazine. We can offer psychological support to anyone who feels they might need support after sharing their stories. We can offer up to 6 free sessions via phone, Skype or face to face (available to people who can travel to our London Office at their own cost). You can also approach your GP/family doctor for free psychological support if needed (assuming your doctor offers free support). You can seek support from your local services that offer mental health support. If you are in a town where there are no formal mental health services, do speak to reputable persons (e.g. recognised faith or community leaders, nurses, family and friends) who are in position to offer emotional support in times of need before a formal service is arranged for you. People in the UK can seek support from:

§ Mental health services: If you are already in the care of mental health services your care plan will contain details of the person you should contact in a crisis.

 

Additional information

The magazine may also carry articles offering simple, easy to understand professional views on psychological/emotional, physical health, financial and legal wellbeing for families. For maximum positive impact on family wellbeing, the magazine may be published twice a year, as a single complete magazine or as multiple stand-alone articles. The magazine will be published in English and in print and electronic format. At the discretion of the publisher, the magazine may also be released in Russian, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Swahili, Chinese, Japanese and other major languages. The publisher Dr. Francis Selemo (clinical psychologist and cognitive behavioural psychotherapist) is producing the magazine with the help of a specialist team that includes: psychologists; therapists; psychiatrists; journalists; University lecturers; dedicated parents; and professionals from different career backgrounds.
