I 3. What will you ask your British friend about his/her family?

If I had a British friend I would ask him/her such questions about his/her family:

Is your family nuclear or an extended one?

Is your family friendly and close-knit?

Have you got a big family?

Do you keep any family traditions?

Do you like to spend your free time with your family?

I 4. What can you advise people who want to have a close and happy family?

Variant 1

I think we are old enough to realize that adults are not saints and may make mistakes and that the so-called generation gap should not spoil our relations. Good children are prepared to compromise and meet their parents halfway, render any possible help to their parents, treat their parents in the way they would like to be treated themselves.

So first of all I can advise for anyone to try to understand the feelings of your parents and show respect to them. Even if you don’t agree with their thinking, try to make them understand politely, don’t use harsh words with them which may hurt. It’s important to celebrate your parents’ and grandparents’ birthdays. It will make them realize that you care for them.

Variant 2

I advise people who want to have a close family to be very respectful to all the family members. You should be helpful and polite, try to understand each other, and help to solve different problems. Of course, I would recommend spending a lot of time together and taking up any hobby you enjoy.

Variant 3

If you want to have a happy family, try to be patient and understanding. Respect and support your family members. Talk over your problems together. Share your domestic chores. Keep your family traditions.

Variant 4

If you want to have a close-knit family you should be very patient. Try to help each other in everything. I advise to spend more time together doing something pleasant, interesting and exciting. If you respect, trust and believe in each other you can solve any problems you have.

I 5. Why are there many one-parent families? How does the state help such families?

Variant 1

It’s sad that families are getting smaller these days. One-parent families are those where one of the parents is no longer part of the family unit, possibly due to death or divorce, leaving the remaining parent with the unenviable task of bringing up the children and trying to earn a living at the same time. Of course such families have support on behalf of the state. There are special financial programs to help the families with low income. Children may have free meals at school or they may have an opportunity to go to a summer camp.

Variant 2

Nuclear families are those which have a mother, a father and their children (biological or adopted).One-parent families are families with children under age 18 headed by a parent who is widowed or divorced and not remarried, or by a parent who has never married. Single-parent families can no longer be viewed as nontraditional families. These families are all around us today.

A single parent is sometimes working long hours trying to make ends meet, so our government gives some help to such families. It provides baby’s food free of charge for children under 2. And it gives a special child-care allowance for such families.
