Choosing the right career lo follow is probably one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Most of people spend a greater part of their lives at work. For that reason you should do a lot of thinking about who you are, about the things you like to do and the things you can do well. Perhaps you like working with hands or you are interested in machines. You may prefer using your brains or meeting with people. Your interests may take you into the world of business. Or you consider government service the most suitable for you. It means that when choosing a future career you must be realistic about your interests and abilities. Good education is also very important. School gives us only background knowledge. We can get specialized knowledge at university or other institution of higher learning.

Is every profession honourable? There is the only answer to this question: every profession is honourable. I suppose, the main factor here is the man's attitude to his work. But the prestige of some professions is so high that many young people seek to join them. Practically all of us dream to become a film actor, a pop-singer or a banker. I should say that dreams are one thing and reality is another thing. Society needs not only actors, singers, writers and bankers but also doctors, drivers, teachers, scientists, shop-assistants, engineers, farmers etc. — people to work in different spheres of life.

Itgoes without saying that when choosing a career you should take into account future employment, good and steady wages, good working conditions etc. These factors arc important to learn the profession very well and to establish yourself in 1ife. Most people share the opinion that a profession is good if it brings in money. A person who has enough money has few worries because he can solve al1 life's problems, he can travel a lot, enjoy better 1ife etc. To my mind, it is good to have enough money for your work but if you can't find dignity and satisfaction in work, money is nothing.

As for me I made my choice long ago. I want to become an economist. There are some reasons why this career sounds interesting to me. First of all, it is a family tradition and I'd like to follow it. Economics is the science which is based on the facts of people's everyday life. And economists study the system which affects their life. They try to describe the facts of the economy in which people live in and to explain how the system works. The science of economics is concerned with all material wants and needs. Second, nowadays there is a great demand of highly-educated economists in Belarus because our republic is transferring to a market economy. So I'd like to combine my dream with the needs of our society.
