REPUBLIC OF BASHKORTOSTAN

The Republic of Bashkortostan – a sovereign republic within the Russian Federation – is located along the South Urals and the adjacent plains. Its territory is 143,500 square kilometers and the population is over 4 million people. The Republic numbers 20 cities and towns, the largest being the capital Ufa followed by Sterlitamak, Salavat, Neftekams, Oktyabrski and others.About 130 nationalities inhabit the Republic. They are Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars, Chuvashes, Mordva, Mari and others.

Bashkortostan can be divided into 3 parts – western, mountainous and Bashkir Trans-Urals. The western part is located upon the Russian plains, projecting to the Volga region. It is here that the majority of population lives. Highland Bashkortostan includes the South Ural Mountains. Bashkir Trans-Urals forms a narrow strip to the east of the Urals merging with the West Siberian Plains.

Bashkortostan’s climate is continental with warm, sometimes hot summers and cold winters. More than 600 rivers and 800 lakes contribute to the beauty of the Republican landscape. Bashkortostan is rich in forests, with birch-trees, limes, oaks and maples and conifers. Nearly a third of all lime trees of Russia grow in the republic, making Bashkir honey world-famous.

Bashkortostan’s natural resources consist of iron ore, copper, gold, zinc, brown coal, natural gas, chromium, manganese, lime-stone and many other deposits numbering well over 3,000. Oil is the main resource and so oil-related industries – oil refining, chemical and petrochemical; together with power generation have become principal ones. Diverse natural riches combined with convenient geographical location promote the development of manufacture and agribusiness.

The Republic of Bashkortostan possesses every facility for exports and imports of raw materials, fuel and manufactured items, maintaining trade and business ties with both the West and the East.

Bashkortostan stands out for its stable and peaceful atmosphere against the background of political tension in a lot of subject of the RF.
