We hope you are looking forward to starting your course. For many of you, this will be your first taste of independence; there’ll be new people to meet, places to visit, and things to experience. The next few years are some of the most exciting times of your life.

Manchester Metropolitan became a Polytechnic in (When?) and a University in 1992. It developed initially as a centre of Technology, Art and Design from Manchester Mechanics’ Institution (1824) and Manchester School of Design (1838). Later schools of Commerce (founded 1889), Education (f. 1878) and Domestic Science (f. 1880) were added along with colleges at Didsbury, Crewe, Alsager and the former Domestic and Trades College (f. 1911).

Today Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is one of the largest universities in the country. There are over 30,000 students who study at (How many?) faculties: faculty of art and design; faculty of health, psychology and social care; faculty of humanities, law and social studies; faculty of science and engineering and others.

The university offers about 400 courses. There are (How many?) campuses. The central campus is one of the largest in the UK. MMU admits a lot of international students every year. At present there are students from (How many?) other countries. Two thirds of the students study full -time. The university has (How many?) halls of residence. There are seven libraries with more than one million books.

Academic year is divided into three terms – autumn, spring and summer. Autumn term usually lasts 8 weeks (e.g. from 22 September to 19 December in 2008-2009). Spring term begins in January and lasts about (How long?) (e.g. from 12 January to 27 March in 2008-2009). Summer term begins in April and ends in June (e.g. from 20 April to 26 June in 2008-2009).

There are extensive facilities for (What?). In MMU students may join any of 30 Athletic Union sports clubs and societies. These include classes in squash, yoga, swimming, aerobics, team sports and individual fitness/health courses.

All students of the University are entitled to membership of the Manchester metropolitan Students’ Union. The Union’s entertainment programme keep the students busy when they are not studying with weekly events: club nights, comedy evenings, quiz nights The Union runs over (How many?) clubs and societies. There is also a Students’ Job Shop where students are helped to find a part-time job whilst they study.
