Exercise 1. Pronounce the following verbs consulting a dictionary. Learn

them.

recognize — узнавать/признавать, compete — соперничать/сорев-

новаться, contribute — вносить вклад, disseminate — распространять,

interrogate — расспрашивать/допрашивать, execute — выполнять,

imply — подразумевать/означать, entertain — развлекать, survive —

выживать, found — основывать, invest — инвестировать/вкладывать

средства, advise — советовать/консультировать, conduct — проводить,

, extend — расширять, fire — увольнять, last — длиться, give in — сда-

ваться, thrive — процветать/преуспевать

Exercise 2. Form nouns using the appropriate suffixes. Check their

pronunciation and spelling in a dictionary. Translate the nouns

from English into Russian.

Model: entertain — entertainment (развлечение)

-ion/tion: recognize, compete, contribute, disseminate, interrogate, exe-

cute, imply, extend, inform, concentrate;

-er/or: disseminate, entertain, survive, found, invest, interrogate, advise,

compete;

-ment: entertain, develop, establish, govern, manage, pay, employ, appoint.

 

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences paying attention to the new words.

1. Who are you? I can’t recognize you. 2. These two companies compete

with each other. 3. They are bad employees. I want to fire them. 4. We must

contribute to this project. It is our duty. 5. The meeting lasts from 3 to 4. It

doesn’t last long. 6. You can’t give in. We trust you. 7. The competitor is

thriving. We must remember about it. 8. We must conduct customer

research. 9. The manager’s goal is to disseminate information. 10. Can we

extend their research?

Exercise 4. Pronounce these adjectives paying attention to the suffixes.

Learn them.

self-confid ent — самоуверенный, extravag ant — экстравагантный/

непомерный, success ful — успешный, best-sell ing — бестселлер, civ ic

гражданский, academ ic — учебный/теоретический, charit able — бла-

готворительный/милосердный, avail able — доступный/имеющийся

в наличии, gener ous — щедрый, numer ous — многочисленный,

vision ary — воображаемый/непрактичный, distinguish ed — выда-

ющийся/заслуженный.

Exercise 6. Compare the Present Simple and the Present Continuous.

Translate the sentences from English into Russian.

1. We invest in new projects every year. We are investing in a profitable

project now.

2. Our department usually organizes a lot of competitions but we are not

organizing a competition this year.

3. Our Personnel Manager sometimes interrogates candidates in the Top

Manager’s office but now he is interrogating them in his own office.

 


 

 

4. Our manager is very strict. He often fires employees. Now he is firing

one of his apprentices.

5. Mr McMillan is the author of numerous books about business. He

writes one book every year. He is writing a new book about the growth of

companies at the moment.

6. Managers disseminate information. It is their goal. Our manager is

disseminating the information about tomorrow’s meeting now.

7. Employees sometimes complain about overwork and low wages. They

are speaking to their manager now and complaining about their time

schedule.

8. Our team leader always finds solutions to all our problems. We are

having a problem now and he is trying to find the best solution.

Exercise 7. Make the sentences in the Present Simple interrogative using

the question words in brackets.

1. Our Personnel Manager employs hundreds of workers every year

(how often).

2. Their company competes with two international companies (how

many).

3. They conduct numerous tests (what).

4. The panel frequently invites distinguished researchers to their

conferences (who).

5. We always try to eliminate excessive paperwork (what kind of)

6. Our company invests millions of dollars in research and development

(how much).

7. The meetings in our company usually last one hour (how long).

8. The workers attend business meetings regularly (how often).

Exercise 8. Make the sentences in the Present Continuous interrogative

using the question words in brackets.
