Exercise 2. Telex punctuation.

In long telexes the word STOP is used to show where a sentence ends. Write the word STOP where necessary in these telexes. Then write out the messages in full. Notice that 1\2, 1\4 etc. are written 1/2, 1/4 etc. and % is written 0/0.

Exercise 4. Change the following sentences into telex language. The Telex Abbreviations at the end of the Appendix will help you.

3. I will meet you on 28 February next week at the Plaza Hotel. Could you please bring some samples of your work?

4. Thank you very much for the documents you sent me last week. I will get a reply to you as soon as possible.

5. We would like to inform you that we have recently moved to new premises.

6. I look forward to seeing you on 26 January.

Exercise 5. Try to guess the meanings of the following words and word combinations:

contract – legal agreement between two people or organizations;

to deliver – to transport goods to a customer;

cement – grey powder, made from lime and clay, which becomes hard like stone after adding water and drying – used in building;

contact – person to ask for help or advice;

spare part – small piece of machinery used to replace part of a machine which is broken;

form – official printed paper to be filled in with information;

detail – piece of information;

delivery – transport of goods to a customer's address;

due – expected to arrive;

to pick up – to collect;

to confirm – to say that something is certain.

Exercise 6. First look at the telexes below. Then listen to the three telephone calls. As you listen, match each telephone call to one of the telexes below:
