Problem-based approach in teaching intensive reading

Reading is one of the main skills students must acquire while mastering a foreign language. The aim of reading is achieving deep and accurate understanding of text, finding inferences, realizing logical structure of the text and grasping main ideas. It is possible through using problem-solving tasks.

Problem is a subject formed in the mind, contradiction between knowledge and its absence, known facts and unknown, real notion and ideal. By I.Y.Lerner problematic learning is defined as a system of special techniques and methods of teaching, based on the principle of active learning and visualization, when students guided by teachers are involved in the process of solving problems.

Problem-based approach can be realized in the following ways:

1. The teacher suggests a problem and solves it in discussion with the students.

2. The teacher suggests a problem. Students solve it themselves or under the teacher's guidance.

3. Students raise a problem. The teacher helps them to solve it.

4. Students come up with a problem and solve it independently.

We state that problem-based approach could be implemented at all stages of intensive reading:

1) pre-reading stage

2) while-reading stage

3) the post-reading stage.

The problem suggested at the pre-reading stage helps to motivate students’ interest in reading and overcome language difficulties. Grasping texts arouse the students' interest and involve them in reading. At this stage problem-solving tasks can be realized through exercises in prediction. Talking about students' personal experiences related to the text, previewingthe events of the text, expressing personal ideas on the related matter help to arouse interest in reading and set a problem before reading………………………………………………………………………..
