AT THE HOTEL

LESSON 1

Introduction

Being dedicated to the service of people away from home, hospitality industry is concerned with their accommodation, provision of food and drink, their transportation and entertainment. That is why the institutions, which provide these services, are divided into three branches: hotel business (provision of places to stay), restaurant business (provision of food and drink), and tourist business (provision of transport and entertainment).

The HOTELS may be classified according to location, prices, and type of services offered. By virtue of their location, hotels may be central (situated in the city center), resort (in exotic locations), airport (for air passengers), and freeway (on the highways). By virtue of prices, hotels can be classified into luxury, up-scale, mid-scale, and budget. And by virtue of services offered, hotels may be classified into full-service (with all sorts of services), economy (offering clean, reasonably sized and furnished rooms), residential (for long-term guests), all-suite hotels (rooms with adjacent lounge and kitchenette area).

1 b. Translate into Russian:

1. When travelling in Europe the Greys had only personal hand duty-free baggage. They had no problems

at the customs.

2. Mr. Drown sent his pasport to be vised a week ago. He is going abroad the day after tomorrow.

3. He went through, the border customs very quickly as he had only things for personal use.

4. Mr. Wolf had a big problem at the customs because he had no permission for duty-free importation of

the computer equipment that he had bought in France at very reduced prices.

5. He says he will buy these tape-recorders if he has an import (export) licence for these goods. These

things are not duty-free.

6. Tom tried to avoid declaring these goods and was fined. He had to pay very high customs duties that

exceeded the goods initial price many times. It serves him right He is a great profiteer and grabber, making

money on dirty business.

7. In this country they don't l evy duties on personal hand property.

8. Diplomatic property is always exempted from custom duty isn't it?

9. He could go abroad in time as his passport was endorsed.
