B. While reading the text try to answer the question given in its first line.

OSCAR FILM FESTIVAL

Why are we so interested in watching people receiving awards? It seems that prize-giving has spread across the planet like an infectious disease.

It all started with the Oscars. The Academy Awards were first handed out on the 16th of May 1929. At that time, the awards weren't called Oscars. The gold statuette got its name in 1931 because the director of the Academy thought that it looked like her uncle Oscar.

In those days, 250 people paid $10 each to watch the ceremony. However, it probably wasn't that exciting because the audience already knew the winners' names. These days, no one knows who has won until the famous sealed envelope is opened.

Few stars would ever consider selling their awards but occasionally. Oscars do come up for sale. In December, 1996, top director Steven Spielberg bought an Oscar which was originally presented to Clark Gable. Spielberg bought the Oscar at an auction and gave it back to the Academy as a present. No one knows exactly how much he paid for the Oscar but he was desperate to stop private collectors from buying it. According to Spielberg, “It`s hard for people outside the film industry to understand the respect that an Oscar carries for those of us who make movies. We are supposed to be cynical people, but everybody I talked to was offended at the idea that this statuette might end up on the mantelpiece of someone who hadn`t earned it”.

Winning an Oscar can be bad for your love life. Some male stars have huge egos and if their partner wins an Oscar, they become incredibly jealous. Legend has it that many Hollywood relationships have broken up because of Oscar jealousy. There's a long list, including Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh and more recently, (as rumor has it) Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson.

Every famous actress wants to look great at an awards ceremony. Surprisingly, ninety per cent of the stars at the Oscars borrow their diamonds from Harry Winston, a well-known Hollywood jeweller. Once, Oscar nominees like Sharon Stone and Susan Sarandon went to his shop to borrow diamond necklaces, sapphire broaches and ruby earrings.

Winston lent £20 million worth of jewellery in all. “We've never lost a thing” he said. Although Sharon Stone once failed to return a necklace on time.

Award winners are reminded to keep their speeches short and asked not to get too carried away. When “Brave Heart” won 5 Oscars in 1996, Mel Gibson started his acceptance speech with the words “I don`t write speeches”. Then he gave the audience a long lecture about why Scotland should be an independent country.

Although actors have a reputation for having big egos, musicians seem to be even harder to please. Organisers were asking for trouble when they invited Oasis to share a Novello award for song-writing with rival band Blur. Oasis refused to accept the award and auctioned it for charity. Pulp's Jarvis Cocker got into trouble for disrupting Michael Jackson's performance during BRITs. Later when Pulp`s album won the £25.000 Mercury Music Prize, Jarvis amazed the judges by giving the prize to a rival nominee — War Child (an album recorded to raise money for Bosnian refugees).

Why does the public bother watching the process of giving awards? The answer is simple. The public seems to love watching glamorous awards ceremonies. The Oscars have been broadcast ever since 1930. It wasn't long, before other organisations started giving prizes. The Cannes Film Festival, began in 1946 and the American awards for music and TV, (Grammies and Emmys) followed in 1949 and 1958. More recently, we've had lots of new music awards from MTV Europe, the Brits and Mercury. It seems as if that isn't enough. Every year more and more prizes are given away to novelists, comedians and sports people. Perhaps awards are so popular because we like to watch the winners, as they sincerely thank their friends and colleagues. Or are we secretly more interested in the sad faces of the losers, who have to clap politely whilst thinking “It should have been me”?

It`s hard for people outside the film industry to understand the respect that an Oscar carries for those of us who make movies…” Whom does this phrase belong? Do you understand the respect that an Oscar carries for people who make movies? Is it always positive?

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Cannes is a small city in the south of France on the Côte d'Azur. Every year the film festival usually starts in May and runs approximately for a week. It is probably the most famous film festival in the industry, and is one of France's most important cultural and business events.

It all started with the first competitive international film festival held in Venice in 1932. The awards were about national prestige for the participating countries, as well as the films themselves. As World War II drew closer, there was favouritism of giving the awards to countries of the “fascist alliance”. In 1939, a French film was tipped to be awarded the festival's top prize, but instead, it was shared between a German film made in association with the Ministry of Propaganda, and a film made by Mussolini's son. This outraged the French and they withdrew from the competition, along with the British and American judges.

A group of filmmakers and critics asked the French government to fund an alternative film festival where films would be shown without bias or political repression. Amongst others, the campaign was headed by the founder of the cinema, Louis Lumière. The first festival attempted to take place on the 1st September 1939, but was cancelled when France joined Great Britain in declaring war on Germany following the invasion of Poland. The festival had a rough re-start in September 1946 and in the following years. It was eventually moved to the spring in 1954, along with the introduction of the Palme d'Or - the replacement top prize. It is now a very glamorous “red-carpet” event with the world's, best filmmakers, actors and critics attending, and over 2,200 films submitted for consideration, every year.

Famous winners have included: Walt Disney; Ingmar Bergman; Jacques Cousteau; Federico Fellini; Akira Kurosawa; Jane Campion.
