Why study in the USA?

The United States hosts more international students than any other country in the world, a number fast approaching 600,000. In fact, foreign students comprise approximately 4% of the total undergraduate USA college population and 10% for graduate school. These students come from every continent of the world because they believe that an American higher education will offer them the best preparation for their future. They leave their homes, families and friends in order to pursue their dreams in the United States.

The main advantages of higher education in the USA are as follows:

world class learning institutions. The United States has more institutions of higher learning than any other country in the world. But the quality of these academic bodies is more important. The research at many of these universities is cutting-edge and often published in journals worldwide. Many of the professors at these schools are leading authorities in their field. The list of world-class learning institutions in the USA is endless and includes, but are not limited to Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, California Institute of Technology, UC Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, MIT, John Hopkins, Northwestern University, etc.

Endless study choices. One of the best things about studying in the USA is the vast number of academic options offered to students. Since the USA is such a large country with vast resources, almost every field of study is available in the country.

Worldwide recognition. Many US colleges and universities are recognized all over the world.

Supporting industries, training and research. Because of the vast wealth of resources in America, the opportunities for practical training period related to a particular field of study are vast. Most colleges and universities have established affiliations with employers and researchers in different fields of study, thereby creating an avenue for students to obtain hands-on and invaluable experience. Many universities even require that students obtain practical training in order to graduate. In many cases, these opportunities are not available anywhere else in the world. Many universities incorporate the latest technology into their curriculum, encouraging students to obtain proficiency before they go out into the workplace.

Flexibility. Most schools offer academic programs that are flexible in nature. This means that, very often, one can choose when to attend classes, how many classes to enroll in each semester or quarter, what elective or optional classes to take, etc.

Campus experience. It has been said that the friends and experience obtained through campus life are worth as much as the education itself. Many people make lifetime friends. The lessons learned by coexisting and living with others from all over the world are priceless.

Global focus. More and more often, American colleges and universities are focusing on the global aspects of each subject, better preparing students with a worldwide view of their field.

Ivy League – «Лига плюща»,8 старейших и наиболее привилегированных частных колледжей и университетов, расположенных в штатах Атлантического побережья на северо-востоке страны (первоначально − ассоциация футбольных команд этих университетов). В состав ассоциации входят университеты: Браунский, Колумбийский, Гарвардский, Корнельский, Пенсильванский, Принстонский, Йельский и Дартмутский колледж. По английской традиции стены этих учебных заведений увиты плющом.

Brown University – Университет Брауна (в Провиденсе, шт. Род-Айленд). Основан баптистами в 1764. Название получил в 1804 г. по имени торговца Николаса Брауна, внесшего наибольшие пожертвования в фонд университета.

Columbia University – Колумбийский университет в Нью-Йорке. Престижное частное учебное заведение, славится школой журналистики.

Сornell University – Корнельский университет (в Итаке, шт. Нью-Йорк). Основан в 1865 г., назван в честь финансиста и филантропа Эзры Корнелла, пожертвовавшего университету значительные денежные средства и обширные земельные угодья.

Dartmouth College – Дартмутский колледж (в Гановере, шт. Нью-Гемпшир). Получил статус колледжа в 1769 г., основан на базе миссионерской школы для детей индейцев.

Harvard University – Гарвардский университет (в Кембридже, шт. Массачусетс). Старейшее высшее учебное заведение США, основан пуританами в 1636 г. Статус университета получил в 1782 г., в 1636 г. получил имя Джона Гарварда.

University of Pennsylvania – Пенсильванский университет, основан в 1749 г. в Филадельфии по инициативе Бенджамина Франклина. Первый в США колледж, получивший статус университета.

Princeton University – Принстонский университет, один из старейших и наиболее престижных американских университетов. Находится в Принстоне (шт. Нью-Джерси). Основан в 1746 г. в качестве колледжа Нью-Джерси.

Yale University – Йельский университет (в Нью-Хейвене, шт. Коннектикут), один из крупнейших университетов США. Основан в 1701 г. как колледж Коннектикута. Назван в честь торговца Ост-Индской компании Э. Йейла, внесшего богатые пожертвования в его фонд.

Cambridge – Кембридж, пригород Бостона (штат Массачусетс). Местонахождение Гарвардского университета (Harvard University) и Массачусетского технологического института(Massachusetts Institute of Technology), крупнейшего высшего технического учебного заведения США.

Berkeley – Беркли, пригород Сан-Франциско. Здесь находится часть Калифорнийского университета (другая часть занимает студенческий городок в Лос-Анжелесе (University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA).

Standford University – Стэнфордский университет (в шт. Калифорния).Высокопрестижный, считается университетом либеральных взглядов; известен гуманитарными и физико-математическими исследованиями.

John Hopkins University – Университет Джонса Гопкинса (в Балтиморе, шт. Мэриленд). Считается лучшим в штате; славится медицинским факультетом.
