Exercise 1. Copy out the sentences in which the word combinations are used. Learn these word combinations and give an oral reproduction of the situation in the text in which each word combination is used. Translate the word combinations.

Exercise 2. Translate the sentences from English into Russian /Ukrainian.

1. The effect of this simple sentence on the rest of the family was incredible.

2. Uncle Vernon sat back down, breathing like a winded rhinoceros and watching Harry closely out of the corners of his small, sharp eyes.

3. Uncle Vernon was large and neckless, with an enormous black moustache; Aunt Petunia was horse-faced and bony; Dudley was blond, pink and porky.

4. Now the school year was over, and he was back with the Dursleys for the summer, back to being treated like a dog that had rolled in something smelly.

5. No cards, no presents, and he would be spending the evening pretending not to exist.

 

Exercise 3. Translate the sentences from Ukrainian into English.

1. Гаррі дорого заплатив за цю свою розвагу.

2. Дадлі собі байдикував – тинявся, ласував морозивом, а Гаррі тим часом протирав вікна, мив машину, косив газон, давав лад клумбам, підрізував і поливав троянди та фарбував садову лавку.

3. На холодильнику стояв приготований на вечір пудинг: величезна запіканка зі збитих вершків і зацукрованих фіалок.

4. Проходячи повз вітальню, Гаррі побачив дядька Вернона і Дадлі в метеликах і смокінгах.

5. Гаррі навшпиньки пройшов до спальні, прослизнув усередину, зачинив за собою двері і обернувся до ліжка, щоб упасти на нього.

 

Exercise 4. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion.

2. When dinner’s over, you take Mrs.Mason back to the lounge for coffee, Petunia, and I’ll deliberately and gradually introduce the subject of drill into the conversation.

3. What is the most popular sport in the wizarding world?

4. What people were called Muggles?

5. How many years had Harry spent with the Dursleys before entering Hogwarts?

 

Exercise 6. Grammar revision.

Explain the usage of the definite article in the following word combinations:
