(Дни заточения)

The arrival of a second fighting-machine drove us from our peephole into the scullery (появление: «прибытие» второй боевой машины прогнало нас от щели, /заставив перебраться/ в судомойню; to drive — ехать, гнать; загонять, прогонять), for we feared that from his elevation (поскольку мы опасались, что со своего возвышения; elevation — поднятие; возвышенность) the Martian might see down upon us behind our barrier (марсианин может, посмотрев вниз, /увидеть/ нас за нашим укрытием; barrier — барьер, ограждение). At a later date we began to feel less in danger of their eyes (позже мы почувствовали себя в меньшей опасности быть замеченными; at a later date — позднее, впоследствии), for to an eye in the dazzle of the sunlight outside (поскольку для их глаз при ярком свете солнца снаружи) our refuge must have been blank blackness (наше убежище должно было казаться просто темным пятном; blank — белый; бледный, бесцветный; полный, чистейший, абсолютный), but at first the slightest suggestion of approach (но сначала малейший намек на их приближение) drove us into the scullery in heart-throbbing retreat (заставлял нас бросаться назад в судомойню с колотящимся сердцем; to throb — биться, пульсировать; retreat — отступление). Yet terrible as was the danger we incurred (однако, несмотря на страх перед опасностью, которой мы подвергались), the attraction of peeping was for both of us irresistible (желание выглянуть наружу для нас обоих было неотразимым; attraction — притяжение, тяготение). And I recall now with a sort of wonder (и я теперь вспоминаю с некоторым удивлением) that, in spite of the infinite danger in which we were between starvation and a still more terrible death (что, несмотря на огромную: «безграничную» опасность — мы могли умереть либо голодной, либо еще более ужасной смертью), we could yet struggle bitterly for that horrible privilege of sight (мы были еще в состоянии ожесточенно бороться за сомнительную: «ужасную» привилегию смотреть /сквозь щель/; bitterly — горько; злобно, ожесточенно; sight — видимость; рассматривание). We would race across the kitchen in a grotesque way (мы то и дело бегали через кухню; grotesque — гротескный; абсурдный, нелепый; way — путь, дорога; способ) between eagerness and the dread of making a noise (/сгорая/ от нетерпения и боясь произвести шум; dread — страх, боязнь), and strike each other, and thrust and kick (били друг друга, толкались руками и ногами; to kick — ударять ногой; брыкаться, лягаться), within a few inches of exposure (в нескольких дюймах от опасности быть замеченными; exposure — подвергание /риску, опасности/; разоблачение).

barrier ['bxrIq], starvation [stQ:'veIS(q)n], exposure [Iks'pquZq]

The arrival of a second fighting-machine drove us from our peephole into the scullery, for we feared that from his elevation the Martian might see down upon us behind our barrier. At a later date we began to feel less in danger of their eyes, for to an eye in the dazzle of the sunlight outside our refuge must have been blank blackness, but at first the slightest suggestion of approach drove us into the scullery in heart-throbbing retreat. Yet terrible as was the danger we incurred, the attraction of peeping was for both of us irresistible. And I recall now with a sort of wonder that, in spite of the infinite danger in which we were between starvation and a still more terrible death, we could yet struggle bitterly for that horrible privilege of sight. We would race across the kitchen in a grotesque way between eagerness and the dread of making a noise, and strike each other, and thrust and kick, within a few inches of exposure.

The fact is that we had absolutely incompatible dispositions and habits of thought and action («дело в том, что» у нас были абсолютно несовместимые характеры, манера мыслить и действовать; disposition — расположение; характер, нрав; habit — привычка), and our danger and isolation only accentuated the incompatibility (а опасность и изоляция лишь подчеркивали эту несовместимость). At Halliford I had already come to hate the curate’s trick of helpless exclamation (я еще в Хэллифорде возненавидел дурную привычку викария беспомощно вскрикивать; trick — хитрость, обман; манера, привычка /часто дурная/), his stupid rigidity of mind (его глупую закоснелость мозгов; rigidity — жесткость; тугоподвижность; rigid — жесткий, негнущийся, негибкий; несгибаемый, твердый, неподатливый). His endless muttering monologue vitiated every effort (его бесконечные невнятные монологи мешали всем моим попыткам; to mutter — бормотать, невнятно говорить; to vitiate — портить, ослаблять; effort — усилие, напряжение; попытка) I made to think out a line of action («которые я делал, чтобы» продумать дальнейшие действия; line — линия; направление, ход), and drove me at times, thus pent up and intensified, almost to the verge of craziness (и временами доводили меня, «так = настолько» подавленного и напряженного, почти до грани сумасшествия; to intensify — усиливать; становиться более напряженным, интенсивным; pent up — ограничиваемый, ограниченный, сдерживаемый). He was as lacking in restraint as a silly woman (ему столь же не хватало сдержанности, как какой-нибудь глупой женщине; to lack — испытывать недостаток, нуждаться; не хватать, недоставать). He would weep for hours together (он хныкал часами напролет; together — вместе; непрерывно, подряд), and I verily believe that to the very end this spoiled child of life thought (и я действительно думаю, что до самого конца это избалованное жизнью “дитя” полагало; verily — истинно, поистине) his weak tears in some way efficacious (что его слабые слезы каким-то образом окажутся действенными = ему помогут; weak — слабый; efficacious — эффективный, действенный). And I would sit in the darkness (а я сидел в темноте) unable to keep my mind off him by reason of his importunities (не в силах не думать о нем из-за его назойливости; unable — неспособный; бессильный; to keep one’s mind off — гнать от себя мысли; importunity — назойливость, надоедливость).

isolation ["aIsq'leIS(q)n], accentuate [xk'sentjueIt], rigidity [rI'dZIdItI]

The fact is that we had absolutely incompatible dispositions and habits of thought and action, and our danger and isolation only accentuated the incompatibility. At Halliford I had already come to hate the curate’s trick of helpless exclamation, his stupid rigidity of mind. His endless muttering monologue vitiated every effort I made to think out a line of action, and drove me at times, thus pent up and intensified, almost to the verge of craziness. He was as lacking in restraint as a silly woman. He would weep for hours together, and I verily believe that to the very end this spoiled child of life thought his weak tears in some way efficacious. And I would sit in the darkness unable to keep my mind off him by reason of his importunities.

He ate more than I did, and it was in vain I pointed out (он ел больше меня, и я напрасно ему говорил: «указывал»; in vain — напрасно, тщетно) that our only chance of life was to stop in the house (что наш единственный шанс выжить — это оставаться в доме) until the Martians had done with their pit (пока марсиане не закончат с ямой = не выберутся из ямы; to have done with — закончить), that in that long patience a time might presently come (что после долгого ожидания: «терпения» может наступить такой момент; time — время; момент, определенное время) when we should need food (когда мы будем нуждаться в пище). He ate and drank impulsively in heavy meals at long intervals (он ел и пил обильно и когда захочет: «импульсивно» после длительных перерывов). He slept little (спал он мало).

As the days wore on (дни медленно тянулись; to wear on — медленно проходить, тянуться; to wear — быть одетым /во что-л./; носить; изнашивать; утомлять, изнурять), his utter carelessness of any consideration so intensified our distress and danger (его крайне беспечное отношение ко всему настолько обострили наше тяжелое положение и опасность, /которой мы подвергались/; consideration — рассмотрение, обсуждение; соображение, внимание; distress — горе, беда; бедственное положение) that I had, much as I loathed doing it, to resort to threats (что я был вынужден, как бы ни противно мне было это делать, прибегнуть к угрозам; to loathe — питать отвращение, чувствовать отвращение; не выносить), and at last to blows (и, наконец, к побоям; blow — удар). That brought him to reason for a time (это на время его образумило; to bring smb. to reason — образумить кого-л.). But he was one of those weak creatures (но он был одним из тех слабых созданий), void of pride, timorous, anaemic, hateful souls, full of shifty cunning (лишенных гордости, робких, вялых, злобных людей, полных хитрости и коварства; hateful — ненавистный; злобный; soul — душа; человек; shifty — изворотливый, хитрый), who face neither God nor man, who face not even themselves (которые не обращаются лицом ни к Богу, ни к человеку, ни даже к самим себе; to face — находиться лицом к).

consideration [kqn"sIdq'reIS(q)n], timorous ['tImqrqs], anaemic [q'ni:mIk]

He ate more than I did, and it was in vain I pointed out that our only chance of life was to stop in the house until the Martians had done with their pit, that in that long patience a time might presently come when we should need food. He ate and drank impulsively in heavy meals at long intervals. He slept little.

As the days wore on, his utter carelessness of any consideration so intensified our distress and danger that I had, much as I loathed doing it, to resort to threats, and at last to blows. That brought him to reason for a time. But he was one of those weak creatures, void of pride, timorous, anaemic, hateful souls, full of shifty cunning, who face neither God nor man, who face not even themselves.

It is disagreeable for me to recall and write these things (мне неприятно вспоминать и писать об этих вещах), but I set them down that my story may lack nothing (но я записываю это, чтобы в своем повествовании не упустить ни /одной/ мелочи; to set down — высаживать, ссаживать; записывать; to lack — испытывать недостаток; не хватать; nothing — ничто). Those who have escaped the dark and terrible aspects of life (те, кто избежал темных и страшных аспектов жизни) will find my brutality, my flash of rage in our final tragedy, easy enough to blame (посчитают мою жестокость, мою вспышку ярости во время заключительной /части/ нашего заточения достойной осуждения; tragedy — трагедия; трагическое событие; to blame — обвинять, порицать); for they know what is wrong as well as any (поскольку они знают, что является дурным, также хорошо, как кто бы то ни было), but not what is possible to tortured men (но не знают, что является возможным для измученных людей; to torture — пытать, мучить). But those who have been under the shadow (но те, кто был во мраке = знает жизнь с темной стороны; shadow — тень; мрак), who have gone down at last to elemental things (кто, в конечном счете, опустился до самых низов; elemental — стихийный; простейший, элементарный), will have a wider charity (проявит бóльшую снисходительность; wide — широкий; обширный, большой; charity — милосердие, милость, проявление милости).

And while within we fought out our dark, dim contest of whispers (и пока мы внутри шепотом вели свои безнадежные утомительные споры; to fight out — довести спор до конца; dark — темный; безнадежный, безрадостный; dim — тусклый, неяркий; унылый), snatched food and drink, and gripping hands and blows (перехватывали еду и питье, цеплялись руками и наносили удары: «цепляющиеся руки и удары»; to snatch — хватать; вырывать), without, in the pitiless sunlight of that terrible June (снаружи под безжалостными лучами солнца того кошмарного июня), was the strange wonder, the unfamiliar routine of the Martians in the pit (марсиане в яме жили своей странной, удивительной и незнакомой нам жизнью; wonder — чудо; нечто удивительное; routine — заведенный порядок, рутина).

disagreeable ["dIsq'grIqbl], charity ['tSxrItI], routine [ru:'ti:n]

It is disagreeable for me to recall and write these things, but I set them down that my story may lack nothing. Those who have escaped the dark and terrible aspects of life will find my brutality, my flash of rage in our final tragedy, easy enough to blame; for they know what is wrong as well as any, but not what is possible to tortured men. But those who have been under the shadow, who have gone down at last to elemental things, will have a wider charity.

And while within we fought out our dark, dim contest of whispers, snatched food and drink, and gripping hands and blows, without, in the pitiless sunlight of that terrible June, was the strange wonder, the unfamiliar routine of the Martians in the pit.

Let me return to those first new experiences of mine (позвольте мне вернуться = давайте вернемся к тем моим первым впечатлениям). After a long time I ventured back to the peephole (после долгого перерыва я отважился вновь /подойти/ к смотровому отверстию), to find that the new-comers had been reinforced by the occupants of no fewer than three of the fighting-machines (и обнаружил, что ко вновь прибывшим присоединились еще три боевые машины: «пассажиры из не менее трех боевых машин»; to reinforce — усиливать, укреплять; occupant — житель, обитатель; пассажир). These last had brought with them certain fresh appliances (эти последние принесли с собой какие-то новые приспособления; certain — точный, определенный; некий, некоторый) that stood in an orderly manner about the cylinder (которые стояли в строгом порядке вокруг цилиндра; in an orderly manner — организованно, в строгом порядке). The second handling-machine was now completed (вторая автоматическая машина была уже собрана: «закончена»), and was busied in serving one of the novel contrivances (и /она/ занималась обслуживанием одного из новых устройств) the big machine had brought (которые доставила большая машина). This was a body resembling a milk can in its general form (по своей общей форме его корпус напоминал молочный бидон), above which oscillated a pear-shaped receptacle (над которым раскачивался грушевидной формы резервуар), and from which a stream of white powder flowed into a circular basin below (и из которого сыпался поток белого порошка в круглый таз под ним).

The oscillatory motion was imparted to this by one tentacle of the handling-machine (колебательное движение придавало ему одно из щупалец автоматической машины). With two spatulate hands the handling-machine was digging out and flinging masses of clay (двумя лопатообразными руками автоматическая машина выкапывала и бросала кучи глины) into the pear-shaped receptacle above (в грушевидный резервуар наверху), while with another arm it periodically opened a door (тогда как еще одной рукой она периодически открывала дверцу) and removed rusty and blackened clinkers from the middle part of the machine (и удаляла порыжевший и обгоревший шлак из средней части механизма; to blacken — чернеть; загорать).

reinforce ["ri:In'fO:s], appliance [q'plaIqns], receptacle [rI'septqkl]

Let me return to those first new experiences of mine. After a long time I ventured back to the peephole, to find that the new-comers had been reinforced by the occupants of no fewer than three of the fighting-machines. These last had brought with them certain fresh appliances that stood in an orderly manner about the cylinder. The second handling-machine was now completed, and was busied in serving one of the novel contrivances the big machine had brought. This was a body resembling a milk can in its general form, above which oscillated a pear-shaped receptacle, and from which a stream of white powder flowed into a circular basin below.

The oscillatory motion was imparted to this by one tentacle of the handling-machine. With two spatulate hands the handling-machine was digging out and flinging masses of clay into the pear-shaped receptacle above, while with another arm it periodically opened a door and removed rusty and blackened clinkers from the middle part of the machine.

Another steely tentacle directed the powder from the basin (еще одно стальное щупальце направляло порошок из таза) along a ribbed channel towards some receiver (по рифленому желобу в какой-то приемный резервуар; channel — канал; желоб, паз; receiver — получатель; сборник, ресивер) that was hidden from me by the mound of bluish dust (скрытый от меня грудой голубоватой пыли). From this unseen receiver a little thread of green smoke rose vertically into the quiet air (из этого невидимого резервуара тонкая струйка зеленого дыма вертикально поднималась в неподвижном воздухе; thread — нить, нитка; тоненькая струйка). As I looked, the handling-machine, with a faint and musical clinking (в этот момент: «когда я смотрел» автоматическая машина с негромким музыкальным звоном), extended, telescopic fashion, a tentacle (протянула напоминающее телескоп щупальце) that had been a moment before a mere blunt projection (которое за минуту до этого было не более чем тупым выступом), until its end was hidden behind the mound of clay (пока его конец не исчез: «не спрятался» за грудой глины). In another second it had lifted a bar of white aluminium into sight (в следующую секунду оно подняло вверх брусок белого алюминия), untarnished as yet, and shining dazzlingly (еще не потускневшего и ослепительно блестевшего), and deposited it in a growing stack of bars (и положило его в /постоянно/ увеличивающуюся стопку /таких же/ брусков) that stood at the side of the pit (стоящую у края ямы; at the side of — рядом с, поблизости от). Between sunset and starlight (от заката солнца до появления на небе первых звезд; starlight — свет звезд) this dexterous machine must have made more than a hundred such bars out of the crude clay (эта ловкая машина, должно быть, изготовила более сотни таких брусков из сырой глины), and the mound of bluish dust rose steadily (и куча голубоватой пыли неуклонно росла; to rise — подниматься) until it topped the side of the pit (пока не достигла края ямы; to top — снабжать верхушкой, покрывать /сверху/; достигать вершины; top — верхушка, вершина).

channel [tSxnl], fashion ['fxS(q)n], steadily ['stedIlI]

Another steely tentacle directed the powder from the basin along a ribbed channel towards some receiver that was hidden from me by the mound of bluish dust. From this unseen receiver a little thread of green smoke rose vertically into the quiet air. As I looked, the handling-machine, with a faint and musical clinking, extended, telescopic fashion, a tentacle that had been a moment before a mere blunt projection, until its end was hidden behind the mound of clay. In another second it had lifted a bar of white aluminium into sight, untarnished as yet, and shining dazzlingly, and deposited it in a growing stack of bars that stood at the side of the pit. Between sunset and starlight this dexterous machine must have made more than a hundred such bars out of the crude clay, and the mound of bluish dust rose steadily until it topped the side of the pit.

The contrast between the swift and complex movements of these contrivances (контраст между быстрыми и сложными движениями этих устройств) and the inert panting clumsiness of their masters was acute (и медлительной, тяжелой неуклюжестью их хозяев был разительным; acute — острый; сильный, резкий), and for days I had to tell myself repeatedly (и на протяжении /многих дней/ мне приходилось неоднократно себе повторять) that these latter were indeed the living of the two things (что, на самом деле, именно эти последние являются живыми существами).

The curate had possession of the slit (викарий находился у щели: «был во владении щели») when the first men were brought to the pit (когда в яму доставили первых людей). I was sitting below, huddled up, listening with all my ears (я сидел на полу: «внизу», съежившись и навострив уши: «слушая всеми своими ушами»; to huddle — сваливать в кучу; съеживаться, сжиматься). He made a sudden movement backward (он внезапно отпрянул: «сделал внезапное движение» назад), and I, fearful that we were observed (и я, испугавшись, что нас заметили), crouched in a spasm of terror (припал к полу, дрожа от страха; spasm — судорога, спазм; приступ, припадок). He came sliding down the rubbish (он соскользнул вниз = на пол, /покрытый/ мусором) and crept beside me in the darkness, inarticulate, gesticulating (и в темноте пополз ко мне, невнятно /бормоча/ и жестикулируя; inarticulate — нечленораздельный, невнятный), and for a moment I shared his panic (и на мгновение я тоже поддался панике: «разделил его панику»). His gesture suggested a resignation of the slit (по его жестам я понял, что он уступает /мне место/ у щели; to suggest — предлагать; наводить на мысль; resignation — отказ от должности, отставка; отказ /от права на что-л./), and after a little while my curiosity gave me courage (и через некоторое время мое любопытство придало мне храбрости), and I rose up, stepped across him, and clambered up to it (я поднялся, перешагнул через него и подтянулся к ней = к щели; to clamber — карабкаться, взбираться). At first I could see no reason for his frantic behavior (сначала я не заметил причины его безумного поведения).

contrivance [kqn'traIv(q)ns], master ['mQ:stq], share [Seq]

The contrast between the swift and complex movements of these contrivances and the inert panting clumsiness of their masters was acute, and for days I had to tell myself repeatedly that these latter were indeed the living of the two things.

The curate had possession of the slit when the first men were brought to the pit. I was sitting below, huddled up, listening with all my ears. He made a sudden movement backward, and I, fearful that we were observed, crouched in a spasm of terror. He came sliding down the rubbish and crept beside me in the darkness, inarticulate, gesticulating, and for a moment I shared his panic. His gesture suggested a resignation of the slit, and after a little while my curiosity gave me courage, and I rose up, stepped across him, and clambered up to it. At first I could see no reason for his frantic behaviour.

The twilight had now come (уже спустились сумерки), the stars were little and faint (звезды были маленькими и тусклыми), but the pit was illuminated by the flickering green fire (но яма была освещена мерцающим зеленым огнем) that came from the aluminium-making (идущим от того, что производили алюминий). The whole picture was a flickering scheme of green gleams (вся картина являла собой мерцающую сеть зеленых вспышек; scheme — схема; рисунок; структура) and shifting rusty black shadows (и передвижение мрачных черных теней; rusty — ржавый; мрачный), strangely trying to the eyes (/что/ необыкновенно утомляло глаза; to try — пытаться, пробовать; утомлять, раздражать). Over and through it all went the bats (повсюду носились летучие мыши), heeding it not at all (совсем не обращая ни на что внимания). The sprawling Martians were no longer to be seen (ползающих марсиан больше не было видно), the mound of blue-green powder had risen to cover them from sight (груда сине-зеленого порошка поднялась /настолько/, что скрыла их из виду), and a fighting-machine, with its legs contracted, crumpled, and abbreviated (и боевая машина, сложив и подобрав под себя опоры: «с подобранными ногами, сжатая и сокращенная»; to contract — сжимать, сокращать; to crumple — комкать, мять/ся/; сгибать; to abbreviate — сокращать), stood across the corner of the pit (стояла в дальнем углу ямы). And then, amid the clangour of the machinery (и тут среди лязга механизмов), came a drifting suspicion of human voices (послышались /звуки/, напоминающие человеческие голоса; to drift — относить, гнать ветром; suspicion — подозрение; подобие), that I entertained at first only to dismiss (которым я вначале не придал значения: «к которым я прислушался сначала, лишь чтобы отвергнуть /возможность этого/»; to entertain — принимать /гостей/; принимать во внимание; to dismiss — отпускать, распускать; отвергать, отбрасывать).

aluminium ["xlju'mInjqm], abbreviate [q'bri:vIeIt], suspicion [sqs'pIS(q)n]

The twilight had now come, the stars were little and faint, but the pit was illuminated by the flickering green fire that came from the aluminium-making. The whole picture was a flickering scheme of green gleams and shifting rusty black shadows, strangely trying to the eyes. Over and through it all went the bats, heeding it not at all. The sprawling Martians were no longer to be seen, the mound of blue-green powder had risen to cover them from sight, and a fighting-machine, with its legs contracted, crumpled, and abbreviated, stood across the corner of the pit. And then, amid the clangour of the machinery, came a drifting suspicion of human voices, that I entertained at first only to dismiss.

I crouched, watching this fighting-machine closely (я пригнулся, пристально следя за боевой машиной), satisfying myself now for the first time (теперь впервые удостоверился; to satisfy — удовлетворять; убеждать, доказывать) that the hood did indeed contain a Martian (что в колпаке в самом деле находится марсианин; to contain — содержать, вмещать). As the green flames lifted (когда /снова/ вспыхнуло зеленое пламя; to lift — поднимать/ся/) I could see the oily gleam of his integument (я увидел отблеск света на его маслянистой оболочке) and the brightness of his eyes (и блеск его глаз). And suddenly I heard a yell (вдруг я услышал крик), and saw a long tentacle reaching over the shoulder of the machine (и увидел, как длинное щупальце потянулось через плечо машины) to the little cage that hunched upon its back (к небольшой клетке, горбом выдававшейся на ее спине; to hunch — горбить, сутулить). Then something — something struggling violently — was lifted high against the sky (/щупальце/ подняло высоко в небо что-то, отчаянно бившееся), a black, vague enigma against the starlight (нечто черное, неясное и загадочное на фоне звезд; enigma — загадка; загадочное явление); and as this black object came down again (и когда этот черный предмет опустился снова), I saw by the green brightness that it was a man (я увидел в зеленом свете, что это был человек). For an instant he was clearly visible (он был отчетливо виден /лишь/ мгновение). He was a stout, ruddy, middle-aged man, well dressed (это был крепкий, румяный, хорошо одетый человек средних лет); three days before, he must have been walking the world (три дня назад он, должно быть, /уверенно/ шагал по жизни; world — мир, земной шар; жизнь), a man of considerable consequence (/был/ человеком большой значимости = весьма солидный; considerable — значительный, большой; consequence — последствие, результат; важность, значимость). I could see his staring eyes (я видел его широко раскрытые глаза) and gleams of light on his studs and watch chain (и отблески света на его запонках и цепочке для часов; stud — гвоздь с большой шляпкой; запонка). He vanished behind the mound (он исчез за кучей /шлака/), and for a moment there was silence (и на мгновение все стихло). And then began a shrieking (потом раздались пронзительные крики) and a sustained and cheerful hooting from the Martians (и продолжительное довольное уханье марсиан; cheerful — бодрый; веселый, радостный).

satisfy ['sxtIsfaI], enigma [I'nIgmq], consequence ['kOnsIkwqns]

I crouched, watching this fighting-machine closely, satisfying myself now for the first time that the hood did indeed contain a Martian. As the green flames lifted I could see the oily gleam of his integument and the brightness of his eyes. And suddenly I heard a yell, and saw a long tentacle reaching over the shoulder of the machine to the little cage that hunched upon its back. Then something — something struggling violently — was lifted high against the sky, a black, vague enigma against the starlight; and as this black object came down again, I saw by the green brightness that it was a man. For an instant he was clearly visible. He was a stout, ruddy, middle-aged man, well dressed; three days before, he must have been walking the world, a man of considerable consequence. I could see his staring eyes and gleams of light on his studs and watch chain. He vanished behind the mound, and for a moment there was silence. And then began a shrieking and a sustained and cheerful hooting from the Martians.

I slid down the rubbish, struggled to my feet (я соскользнул на пол: «на мусор», с трудом поднялся на ноги), clapped my hands over my ears (заткнул уши руками; to clap — хлопать; захлопывать), and bolted into the scullery (и бросился в судомойню). The curate, who had been crouching silently with his arms over his head (викарий, который молча /сидел/, сжавшись и обхватив голову руками), looked up as I passed (взглянул на меня, когда я проскочил мимо), cried out quite loudly at my desertion of him (довольно громко вскрикнул от того, что я его бросаю; desertion — дезертирство; уход, оставление), and came running after me (и бросился бежать за мной).

That night, as we lurked in the scullery (той ночью, когда мы прятались в судомойне; to lurk — скрываться в засаде; прятаться; оставаться незамеченным; таиться), balanced between our horror and the terrible fascination this peeping had (балансируя /на грани/ между страхом и сильнейшим желанием заглянуть в щель: «и необыкновенной притягательностью, которую имело подглядывание»; terrible — страшный, ужасный; /эмоц.-усил./ необыкновенный, жуткий), although I felt an urgent need of action (хотя я и понимал: «чувствовал» безотлагательную необходимость действовать) I tried in vain to conceive some plan of escape (я тщетно пытался придумать какой-нибудь план бегства; to conceive — постигать, понимать; задумывать, замышлять); but afterwards, during the second day (но впоследствии, на протяжении второго = следующего дня), I was able to consider our position with great clearness (я /уже/ был в состоянии трезво обдумывать /создавшуюся/ ситуацию; clearness — ясность, четкость). The curate, I found, was quite incapable of discussion (викарий, как я убедился, был совершенно неспособен /вести/ обсуждение); this new and culminating atrocity had robbed him of all vestiges of reason or forethought (это новое и самое жестокое зрелище лишило его остатков разума и способности мыслить; to culminate — достигнуть высшей точки; atrocity — жестокость, зверство; to rob — грабить; отнимать, лишать; forethought — продуманность, обдуманность). Practically he had already sunk to the level of an animal (практически, он опустился уже до уровня животного). But as the saying goes (но как говорится; saying — высказывание; поговорка, присловье), I gripped myself with both hands (я держался изо всех сил: «схватил себя обеими руками»).

desertion [dI'zWS(q)n], after ['Q:ftq], atrocity [q'trOsItI]

I slid down the rubbish, struggled to my feet, clapped my hands over my ears, and bolted into the scullery. The curate, who had been crouching silently with his arms over his head, looked up as I passed, cried out quite loudly at my desertion of him, and came running after me.

That night, as we lurked in the scullery, balanced between our horror and the terrible fascination this peeping had, although I felt an urgent need of action I tried in vain to conceive some plan of escape; but afterwards, during the second day, I was able to consider our position with great clearness. The curate, I found, was quite incapable of discussion; this new and culminating atrocity had robbed him of all vestiges of reason or forethought. Practically he had already sunk to the level of an animal. But as the saying goes, I gripped myself with both hands.

It grew upon my mind, once I could face the facts (мне пришло в голову, как только я смог посмотреть в лицо фактам; to grow /up/on — нравиться все больше; овладевать), that terrible as our position was (что /каким бы/ ужасным ни было наше положение), there was as yet no justification for absolute despair (полностью отчаиваться все же не стоило: «не было оправдания для полного отчаяния»). Our chief chance lay in the possibility of the Martians making the pit (наш единственный: «главный» шанс заключался в том, что, возможно, марсиане пользовались ямой; to lie — лежать; заключаться в) nothing more than a temporary encampment (не более, чем как временным лагерем). Or even if they kept it permanently (или, если даже они будут ее использовать и в дальнейшем; permanently — постоянно, непрерывно), they might not consider it necessary to guard it (они могут не посчитать нужным охранять ее), and a chance of escape might be afforded us (и, может быть, нам представится возможность бежать; to afford — быть в состоянии позволить себе; давать, предоставлять). I also weighed very carefully the possibility of our digging a way out (я также очень тщательно взвесил возможность прорыть путь наружу) in a direction away from the pit (в направлении, противоположном яме: «прочь от ямы»), but the chances of our emerging within sight of some sentinel fighting-machine (но вероятность попасть в поле зрения одной из боевых машин, стоявших на страже; to emerge — всплывать; появляться; выходить /на поверхность/) seemed at first too great (сначала казалась слишком большой = высокой). And I should have had to do all the digging myself (и мне пришлось бы делать весь подкоп самому). The curate would certainly have failed me (викарий, несомненно, мне /только/ мешал бы; to fail — потерпеть неудачу; подводить, не оправдать ожиданий).

terrible ['terqbl], temporary ['temp(q)r(q)rI], encampment [In'kxmpmqnt]

It was on the third day, if my memory serves me right (это было на третий день, если память меня не подводит: «служит мне правильно»), that I saw the lad killed (когда я увидел, как убили мальчика). It was the only occasion on which I actually saw the Martians feed (это был единственный случай, когда я в действительности увидел, как питаются марсиане). After that experience I avoided the hole in the wall (после этого «события» я избегал /подходить/ к щели в стене) for the better part of a day (почти целый день: «лучшую = большую часть дня»). I went into the scullery, removed the door (я пошел в судомойню, снял дверь; to remove — передвигать, перемещать; снимать), and spent some hours digging with my hatchet as silently as possible (и потратил несколько часов на то, что рыл /землю/ топором, стараясь не шуметь: «тихо, как только возможно»); but when I had made a hole about a couple of feet deep (но когда я сделал = выкопал яму в пару футов глубиной) the loose earth collapsed noisily (рыхлая земля шумно = с шумом обвалилась; loose — свободный; рыхлый /о почве/), and I did not dare continue (и продолжать я не решился). I lost heart, and lay down on the scullery floor for a long time (в отчаянии я пролежал на полу долгое время; to lose heart — падать духом, отчаиваться: «терять сердце»), having no spirit even to move (боясь даже пошевелиться: «не имея храбрости даже двинуться»; spirit — дух, моральная сила; храбрость). And after that I abandoned altogether the idea of escaping by excavation (и после этого я полностью расстался с мыслью о побеге посредством подкопа).

It says much for the impression the Martians had made upon me (достаточно говорит о том впечатлении, которое произвели на меня марсиане, то) that at first I entertained little or no hope (что поначалу я не питал или почти не питал надежды; to entertain — принимать /гостей/; питать /надежду/, лелеять /мечту/) of our escape being brought about by their overthrow through any human effort (что наше спасение состоится благодаря победе людей над ними = марсианами; to bring about — осуществлять; overthrow — поражение, свержение; effort — усилие, попытка; достижение /разг./). But on the fourth or fifth night I heard a sound like heavy guns (но на четвертую или пятую ночь я услышал звуки, похожие на /выстрелы/ тяжелых орудий).

occasion [q'keIZ(q)n], floor [flO:], impression [Im'preS(q)n]

It was on the third day, if my memory serves me right, that I saw the lad killed. It was the only occasion on which I actually saw the Martians feed. After that experience I avoided the hole in the wall for the better part of a day. I went into the scullery, removed the door, and spent some hours digging with my hatchet as silently as possible; but when I had made a hole about a couple of feet deep the loose earth collapsed noisily, and I did not dare continue. I lost heart, and lay down on the scullery floor for a long time, having no spirit even to move. And after that I abandoned altogether the idea of escaping by excavation.

It says much for the impression the Martians had made upon me that at first I entertained little or no hope of our escape being brought about by their overthrow through any human effort. But on the fourth or fifth night I heard a sound like heavy guns.

It was very late in the night (была уже очень поздняя ночь), and the moon was shining brightly (и ярко светила луна). The Martians had taken away the excavating-machine (марсиане убрали /свой/ экскаватор), and, save for a fighting-machine that stood in the remoter bank of the pit (и, кроме боевой машины, стоящей у дальнего края ямы) and a handling-machine that was buried out of my sight (и автоматической машины, скрытой от моих глаз: «от моего зрения»; to bury — хоронить; прятать, скрывать) in a corner of the pit immediately beneath my peephole (в углу ямы прямо под моим наблюдательным отверстием), the place was deserted by them (больше никого не было: «место было ими оставлено»). Except for the pale glow from the handling-machine (если не считать бледных отблесков, /идущих/ от автоматической машины; except for — за исключением, кроме) and the bars and patches of white moonlight (белых полос и пятен лунного света) the pit was in darkness (яма была /погружена/ в темноту), and, except for the clinking of the handling-machine, quite still (и, кроме позвякивания автоматической машины, в ней было совершенно тихо). That night was a beautiful serenity (ночь была прекрасной ясности; serenity — ясность, чистота /неба, воздуха/; неподвижность, спокойствие /в природе/); save for one planet, the moon seemed to have the sky to herself (за исключением одной планеты, луна, казалось, полностью владела небом). I heard a dog howling (я услышал вой собаки), and that familiar sound it was that made me listen (и этот звук был столь знакомым, что заставил меня прислушаться). Then I heard quite distinctly a booming (затем я совершенно отчетливо услышал гул) exactly like the sound of great guns (точь-в-точь похожий на звук мощных орудий). Six distinct reports I counted (я насчитал шесть отчетливых выстрелов), and after a long interval six again (и после долгого перерыва — снова шесть). And that was all (и это было все = потом наступила тишина).
