SPORT AND GAMES

People all over the world are fond of sports and games. That is one of the things in which people of every nationality and class are united. All kinds of physical exercises are very useful to make our bodies strong enough to keep ourselves fit and healthy. The most popular outdoor winter sports are shooting, hunting, hockey, in the countries where the weather is frosty and there is much snow – skating, skiing and tobogganing. Some people greatly enjoy figure-skating and ski-jumping. It`s so nice to go to the skating-rink or to the forest on a frosty sunny day!

Summer affords excellent opportunities for swimming, boating, yachting, cycling, gliding and many other sports. Among outdoor games football takes the first place in public interest; this game is played in all countries of the world. The other games that have firmly established themselves in favour in different countries are golf, lawn-tennis, cricket, volleyball, basketball, and so on. Badminton is also very popular.

All the year round many people indulge in boxing, wrestling, athletics, gymnastics and track and field events. Scores of young girls and women go in for callisthenics. Over the last few years aerobics has become popular with young girls. It helps them to be slim, healthy and strong. The founder of this kind of sport was a well-known American actress Jane Fonda. Being a great enthusiast of aerobics she has been trying to initiate many young women from all over the world into this sport.

Among indoor games the most popular are billiards, table-tennis, draughts and some others, but the great international game is chess, of course. The results of chess tournaments are studied and discussed by thousands of enthusiasts in different countries.

So we may say that sport is one of the things that makes people kin. To cut the long story short, I should admit that everyone must do all he can to be healthy. Physically inactive people get old earlier than those who have plenty of exercises. If you do daily exercises you feel refreshed, have a good posture, and that makes you feel good. I can add that good health is better than the best medicine. You have `A sound mind in a sound body`, as the old Latin saying goes. The English proverb `Sickness in the body brings sickness to the mind` expresses a similar idea, but from a different point of view.

THE FOOTBALL MATCH

England won the toss and the Austrians kicked off into the sun. Two free kicks were given against England in the first two minutes, and the English defence cleared them well.

After 15 minutes play the Austrian centre-forward, Buzek, broke away on the left and McDonald, the goalkeeper, did well to tip a fierce drive over the bar. A minute later the Austrians opened the scoring with a magnificent goal, which McDonald had no chance of saving. Left-half Koller, getting possession about 25 yards out, put in a dynamic drive which sped like a bullet into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

The English forwards pressed continuously, but to no avail. In the 28th minute Douglas shot weakly from close in, while at the other end Buzek lost a great chance of making it two for Austria by shooting inches wide of the uprights from close range. Three minutes later Haynes had a wonderful chance to equalize, but he was hesitant and was robbed. After 35 minutes play the English attack had five or six chances of equalizing, but their shooting was wild.

England continued to do well in midfield, but the forwards were completely inept. Two minutes from the interval Robson was dispossessed by the goalkeeper only feet away from the goalmouth. There was a concluding thrill when goalscorer. Koller again put in a blinding shot from well out but this time he was inches wide of the upright. England were all over Austria on the resumption, but they just could not get in a good scoring shot. Twelve minutes after the interval, however, England equalized with a rather lucky goal. It was J.Haynes, who from two yards out put the ball in the back of the net. England continued to dominate the play, but by wild and weak shooting in front of the goal they failed to press home their advantage.

In the 10-th minute the Austrians went ahead with another goal from well out. Alfred Koerner, the inside-left, put in a stinging drive from nearly 25 yards out which hit the upright and glanced off into the net to put Austria ahead 2=1. Almost from the restart England netted again, Robson scoring from just inside the penalty area. From the Press stand it looked a perfectly good goal, but the referee ruled it no goal presumably for hands.

Four minutes later Kevan equalized, rushing the ball through from close in from a pass by Haynes. Both sides fought hard for the winning goal, but neither goal-keeper was seriously troubled in the closing stages and the game ended in a stalemate.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The Olympic Games have a very long history. They began in 777 BC in Greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries at Olympia. They included many different kinds of sports, running, boxing, wrestling, etc. All the cities in Greece sent their best athletes to Olympia to compete in the Games. For the period of the Games all the wars stopped. So the Olympic Games became the symbol of peace and friendship. In 394 AD the Games were abolished and were not renewed until many centuries later.

In 1894, a Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, addressed all the sports governing bodies and pointed out the significance of sports and its educational value. Two years later the first modern Olympic Games took place. Of course, the competitions were held in Greece to symbolize the continuation of the centuries-old tradition.

In 1896 the International Olympic Committee was set up. It is the central policy-making body of the Olympic movement. It is formed by the representatives of all countries which take part in the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee decides upon the programme of the games, the number of the participants and the city-host for the Games. Over one hundred and fifty countries are represented in the International Olympic Committee now. Besides, each country has its National Olympic Committee. Summer and Winter Games are held separately. There are always several cities wishing to host the Games. The most suitable is selected by the International Committee. After that the city of the Games starts preparations for the competitions, constructs new sports facilities, stadiums, hotels, press centres. Thousands of athletes, journalists and guests come to the Games, and it takes great efforts to arrange everything. There is always an interesting cultural programme of concerts, exhibitions, festivals, etc., for each Games.

XII. Discussion point.

First read the following information:

The Olympics are having many problems. In Munich (1972), terrorists killed Israeli athletes. In Moscow (1980), the United States refused to participate. In Los Angeles (1984), the USSR and other Eastern European countries refused to participate. In Seoul (1988), Cuba and other countries refused to participate. In addition to political problems, the Olympics are having problems with professionalism, drug use, and too many sports.

Step A. Work in groups. You are members of the International Olympic Committee. Your job is to redesign the Olympic Games.

1. Instead of moving the Games from one city to another, discuss the possibility of having one permanent summer city and one permanent winter city. Work out the criteria for choosing the cities.

2. Every year the Olympics adds new sports. Now there are too many (over 237 events in 23 sports). Discuss the possibility of decreasing the number of sports to only 25 individual events (same for men and women) and three team sports (same for men and women). Work out the list of sports.

Step B. Discuss these questions with your group-mates.

1. Should professional athletes participate in the Olympics? Explain.

2. What do you think is the maximum number of athletes a country should have? (In Seoul [1988], the United States had 625 athletes; Brunei had one.)

3. Is it possible to separate sports from politics? If yes, how? If no, why?

4. Should athletes be permitted to use drugs (such as steroids)? Explain.

XIII. Choose the correct answer.

1. Most _________ tennis stars learn the game at an early age.

a)jogging b)running c)sports d)track

5. The new sports centre _______ for all kinds of leisure activities.

a)caters b)deals c)furnishes d)supplies

6. I`m afraid we shall have to call ________ the match on account of the bad weather.

a)back b)in c)off d)on

7. I tried to _______ my disappointment at losing by cheering the winter loudly.

a)hide b)mask c)shield d)veil

8. The fastest runner took the _______ just five metres before the finishing line.

a)advance b)head c)lead d)place

9. There is a lot of friendly ________ between the supporters of the two teams.

a)contention b)contest c)defiance d)rivalry

10. He`s _________ to win. No one else in the race stands a chance.

a)bound b)liable c)probable d)unavoidable

XIV. Thinking ahead. Before reading the text discuss the following statements.

1. Athletes of the future will be taller and stronger than today`s athletes are.

2. In the future, drug-taking in sports will be legalized.

3. What athletes eat and drink before a race is more important than what they eat and drink after a race.

4. A good running shoe helps athletes run faster.

RECORD-BREAKER

A world record is every athlete`s dream, but the hard-won records of a few years ago are mostly just today`s qualifying times. Roger Bannister`s famous four-minute mile of 1956 has been beaten by nearly 15 seconds, while almost an hour and twenty minutes has been taken off the women`s marathon since 1953. `Faster, higher, stronger`, is the Olympic motto, and today`s competitors continue to push back the boundaries of what the body can achieve. But one wonders if this can continue.

The last forty years have seen many important technological advances. For example, since the introduction of strong, flexible fibreglass poles, over a metre has been added to the pole vault record. There have also been important developments in the design of the running shoe. And while a shoe won`t actually make someone run faster, modern shoes do mean many more miles of comfortable, injury-free training.

Pushing back the limits now depends more on science, technology and medicine than anything else. Athletic technique, training programmes and diets are all being studied to find ways of taking a few more seconds off or adding a few more centimetres to that elusive world record. It seems that natural ability and hard work are no longer enough.

The search to find more efficient ways of moving goes on. Analysis of an athlete`s style is particularly useful for events like jumping and throwing. Studies show that long jumpers need to concentrate not on the speed of approach, as once thought, but on the angle their bodies make with the ground as they take off. However, the rules governing each sport limit advances achieved by new styles. For instance only one-footed take-offs are allowed in the high jump.

In the future, it should be possible to develop a more individual approach to training programmes. Athletes will keep detailed diaries and collect data to help predict the point when training becomes overtraining, the cause of many injuries. If athletes feed all their information into a database, it may then be possible to predict patterns and to advise them individually when they should cut down.

Combining the right diet with a training programme is vital. Athletes are continually searching for that special `go-faster` ingredient, but apparently it`s still a battle to get them to drink sufficient liquid and to follow a balanced healthy diet throughout all phases of training, competition and recovery. Diet in the period after an event is particularly important and often neglected. An athlete who doesn`t replace all the liquid lost immediately after a hard run won`t be able to repeat the performance at the same level 24 hours later.

So what of the future? It is no secret that many records are not authentic and with the tightening of drugs controls, performances may actually decline, particularly in events like the shot putt and discus. The throwers of the future will be `clean` and smaller and will pay more attention to technique and less to strength.
