4.4. Idioms with "bone"

Так, русское словосочетание «игральные кости» соответствует английскому слову dice, «белая кость» словосочетанию blue blood, русскому выражению «лечь костьми» соответствует английское to fall in battle, а английскому словосочетанию bone of contention соответствует в русском «яблоко раздора», «предмет вожделений».

Сходство фразеологизмов he is all skin and bone и drenched to the bone с русскими «у него кожа да кости» и «промокнуть до костей» служат скорее исключением, чем правилом.

One

Неопределенно-личное местоимение one соответствует русским неопределенно-личным местоимениям «мы», «вы», «ты»: one doesn't like to have one's words doubted – мы не любим / нам не нравится, когда нашим словам не верят; if one wants a thing done well, one had best do it oneself– если хочешь, чтобы дело было сделано хорошо, делай сам.

Предложения с one и модальными глаголами обычно переводятся безличными предложениями с модальными словами «можно», «нужно», «необходимо», «следует», и one, следовательно, в русском переводе опускается: one has to do one's best – нужно делать все возможное.

I've lost my umbrella and have to buy a new one – я потеряла зонтик и теперь мне приходится покупать новый.

В грамматическом значении указательного местоимения слову one соответствуют следующие эквиваленты: 1) этот, тот (самый); 2) (такой) человек или предмет: which book do you mean? – the one I gave you last week to read – какую книгу ты имеешь в виду? – ту, которую дала тебе на прошлой неделе почитать; she said it in the voice of one who repeats a lesson – она произнесла это тоном человека, повторяющего урок.

(1) "...I'm very doubtful about Adrian as it is, but" – she placed the parakeet on the mantelpiece – "he's my favourite brother. For a favourite brother one does things." "One does," said Dinny. (Gals.)

(2) All the same, one must take precautions – every precaution possible! (Gals.)

(3) The mother: But we must have a cab. We can't stand here until half-past eleven. It's too bad.

The daughter: If Freddy had a bit of gumption, he would have got one at the theatre door. (Shaw)

(4) The gentleman: But is there a living in that? The note-taker: Oh yes. Quite a fat one. (Shaw)

(5) Liza (taking a ring off): This ring isn't the jeweller's; it's the one you bought me in Brighton. I don't want it now. (Shaw)

(6) Fleur! Her name alone was almost enough for one who was terribly susceptible to the charm of words. (Gals.)

(7) Val was still such as he had been in the days of his courtship... He gave impression of one who has lived actively with horses in a sunny climate. (Gals.)
